Usain Bolt Set for Surprise Football Appearance with Wythenshawe FC
Usain Bolt, the fastest man in history, is about to swap the starting blocks for Sunday league pitches in Greater Manchester – at least on paper.
The eight-time Olympic champion’s name has appeared on the official online squad list for Wythenshawe FC Veterans on the Football Association’s Full-Time website, hinting that the 40-year-old is set for a surprise run-out in the Cheshire Veterans League.
This is no ordinary veterans side. Wythenshawe are managed by former Manchester City and Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland and packed with players who once lit up the Premier League. It reads like a roll call from a recent era of English football.
- Danny Drinkwater, a Premier League winner with Leicester.
- Antonio Valencia, the former Manchester United captain.
- Joleon Lescott, Emile Heskey, Marc Albrighton, Nedum Onuoha, Papiss Cissé – all have pulled on the shirt.
Last season alone, the squad collectively boasted more than 1,800 English top-flight appearances.
Now, potentially, add Bolt.
The Jamaican sprint icon has never hidden his love of football. A devoted Manchester United supporter, he chased a professional career in the game after retiring from athletics following the 2017 World Championships. That ambition briefly took him to Australia, where he turned out for Central Coast Mariners in a high-profile trial spell.
He has also been a regular face at Soccer Aid charity matches over the past decade, using his star power and raw pace to draw crowds and headlines alike.
Wythenshawe have yet to formally announce Bolt’s signing and have been contacted for comment. But if the name on that squad list translates into a place on the pitch, Greater Manchester’s veterans league might suddenly become the hottest ticket in Sunday football.
