Balogun Transfer Race: Villa and Barcelona Join Spurs in €60m Pursuit
Folarin Balogun has gone from rising talent to full-blown transfer saga in the space of one blistering season. Now, with the window ticking towards its September 1 deadline, three major clubs are circling – and Monaco know exactly what they want: €60 million.
The 25-year-old forward has become one of the most coveted strikers in Europe after a standout campaign in Ligue 1. Nineteen goals in 43 games across all competitions for Monaco, plus eye-catching performances for the United States at the recent World Cup, have turned him into a priority target rather than a speculative punt.
Tottenham Hotspur moved first. They opened formal talks over a €60m deal as part of a wider push to reshape their attack. For a while, Spurs looked to have a clear run at him.
Not anymore.
L'Equipe report that Aston Villa and Barcelona have now entered the race with concrete interest of their own, blowing the chase wide open just as the market heads into its final stretch.
Villa’s contingency plan, Barça’s rebuild
At Villa, Balogun is part of a bigger equation. The club are keeping a close eye on the Saudi Pro League, and specifically Al-Hilal, amid ongoing interest in Ollie Watkins. If their main striker is tempted away, Villa want to be ready. Balogun is high on that contingency list.
Barcelona’s need is even more stark. They have parted ways with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, ripping out the heart of their frontline. The Catalan club are scrambling for firepower, and Balogun has moved sharply up their shortlist as they look for a focal point to lead a new-look attack.
For Monaco, the situation is delicate but clear. They are prepared to cash in at the right price to fuel further squad building, mirroring the approach that saw Maghnes Akliouche leave for Paris Saint-Germain. The model is established: sell a star at peak value, reinvest, move again.
Spurs, for their part, are not short of alternatives. Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush is among the other names under consideration. Yet Balogun remains the headline target, the one they have already pushed hardest to land.
Monaco’s stance: open to bids, desperate to keep
Inside the Monaco camp, head coach Filipe Luis is trying to hold the line. He knows what is coming. He also knows what he stands to lose.
“He is one of our players. I know he’s going to receive a lot of offers given his last season and his World Cup performance,” Luis said recently, laying out the reality of the situation without dressing it up.
He didn’t stop there.
“He’s a special player. You don’t find many players on the market with his attributes. If he stays, I’ll be really, really happy to have him with us.”
The club’s actions underline that tightrope. Balogun missed Monaco’s dramatic 3-2 Europa Conference League playoff win over Gornik Zabrze in Poland, yet he has been registered on the UEFA squad list. Available. Protected. But also, very clearly, on the market.
Countdown to September 1
The clock is now the most ruthless player in this story. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Barcelona all know the terms: €60m or nothing. Monaco will not be rushed into a discount, and the queue of suitors gives them no reason to blink first.
Balogun is expected back in full training shortly, and a decision is looming over his involvement in Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash with Le Havre. Start him and Monaco risk injury to a major asset. Leave him out and the message to the market is deafening.
Three clubs. One price. A striker at the peak of his value and a window running out of days.
Who makes their move before the deadline slams shut?
