Five Midfielders Chelsea Might Target to Replace Enzo Fernández in January

The departure of Enzo Fernández to Manchester City on Deadline Day left Chelsea without a clear replacement in midfield. This gap might push the Blues to pursue a high-profile signing during the upcoming January transfer window.

Despite an impressive summer transfer window that saw Chelsea generate a record $700 million (£519 million) in player sales, failing to fill the midfield void left by Fernández was a significant oversight. The Argentine’s move was only confirmed late on Deadline Day, leaving Chelsea little time to react.

The team’s midfield showed vulnerability shortly after, notably in their 2–1 loss to Arsenal, exposing the makeshift setup under manager Xabi Alonso. While Alonso will work with the current squad for now, securing another midfielder in January looks like a priority.

Winter signings often come at a premium price, but Chelsea have never hesitated to spend heavily mid-season—Fernández himself was a January acquisition in 2023 for a record fee.

Potential Midfield Replacements for Chelsea

Frenkie De Jong

Frenkie De Jong could find himself surplus to requirements at Barcelona’s crowded midfield once fully fit. Despite a partially torn MCL sidelining him since the 2026 World Cup, De Jong is aiming for an October return without surgery, which Barcelona prefers but he has resisted.

Barcelona's midfield depth, enhanced further by Rodri’s arrival, means De Jong faces stiff competition alongside Pedri, Gavi, and Marc Bernal. Persistent injuries have frustrated the club, possibly making them open to selling.

Chelsea showed interest in De Jong back in 2022, and if he returns healthy, revisiting this pursuit might be ambitious but sensible.

Manu Koné

Manu Koné was close to joining Chelsea last summer but was blocked by AS Roma’s manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The French international impressed with his physicality and ball-carrying skills, qualities that would complement Moisés Caicedo well in Chelsea’s double-pivot midfield.

The Blues reportedly offered about $70.2 million (£52 million) plus winger Jamie Gittens on loan, but Roma’s resistance kept the deal from happening. January could be another chance if Roma becomes more willing to negotiate, especially if they find a replacement or face season challenges.

Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace has attracted attention from major clubs, including Real Madrid. At just 22, he’s a technically skilled midfielder known for progressive passing and brave attempts to break defensive lines—traits reminiscent of Fernández.

Wharton’s ability to advance play from deep would mesh well with Caicedo’s style. Chelsea could face stiff competition, but pursuing him in January may prove worthwhile despite the expected transfer cost.

Lamine Camara

Lamine Camara nearly became Fernández’s replacement on Deadline Day, with Chelsea agreeing personal terms and a $63.7 million (£47.1 million) fee with AS Monaco. The deal fell through at the last moment when Monaco reconsidered after a separate transfer involving Folarin Balogun stalled.

Camara is an athletic midfielder capable of breaking up attacks and maintaining possession. He made an impressive return for Monaco, winning 12 duels and making eight defensive actions against Paris Saint-Germain.

Though relations between the clubs might be strained, Chelsea could renew interest in the 22-year-old come winter.

Alex Scott

Before Fernández left, Chelsea reportedly bid $86 million (£64 million) for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. Bournemouth refused to sell, but January might see the Blues return with a higher offer as Scott tops their midfield wishlist.

At 23, Scott embodies a modern midfielder’s all-around qualities—defensive grit, precise distribution, and offensive threat. Given Bournemouth’s recent willingness to cash in on star players mid-season, Scott could be next.

Multiple Premier League clubs admire Scott, meaning his price may approach $100 million. Chelsea may need to spend big to secure such a promising talent.
