Chelsea Nears £16.3M Deal for Defender Pep Chavarria

Chelsea are closing in on another piece of Xabi Alonso’s rebuild, with a £16.3million deal for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria understood to be nearing completion.

The 28-year-old, a left-sided defender who featured in last season’s Conference League final run, is being lined up to compete directly with Jorrel Hato after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. Talks have progressed to an advanced stage and there is confidence on all sides that an agreement will be sealed, capping a pursuit that has stretched through much of the summer.

Alonso leans into experience

Chavarria’s profile fits the new Chelsea blueprint. Not a starlet for tomorrow, but a ready-made option for today.

Despite his age, he has only four seasons of top-flight football behind him, having stepped up from Segunda Division side Real Zaragoza to Rayo in 2022. Even so, Chelsea see him as part of a shift towards players with enough mileage to handle the demands of a title challenge, rather than prospects learning on the job.

That shift has already been underlined by the arrivals of 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson, who joined on Monday after leaving Brentford. Chavarria would continue that theme: battle-tested, tactically mature, and expected to slot straight into Alonso’s system.

He would also become Chelsea’s third defensive recruit of the window. Right-sided full-back Marco Palestra arrived from Atalanta in July, while Maxence Lacroix completed his move from Crystal Palace last week as the back line undergoes a full-scale renovation.

No move for Diogo Costa

One position that will not change, at least for now, is in goal.

Despite links to Porto’s Diogo Costa, Chelsea are not pursuing the Portugal international. The 26-year-old, who started five games at the World Cup, has been repeatedly mentioned as a potential target, but no contact has been made between the clubs and there is no interest from Stamford Bridge at this stage.

Alonso is content with his current options. Robert Sanchez remains last season’s number one, with Filip Jorgensen as his understudy and 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders adding depth and competition. For all the noise around a new goalkeeper, the manager has chosen continuity.

Chalobah heads for Como

Change is coming in defence in another way, though, with Trevoh Chalobah set to leave.

A deal has been agreed for the defender to join Como, where former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is preparing to lead the Italian club into their first Champions League campaign. Agreements are in place between the clubs and with the player, and Chelsea have secured a sell-on clause that will see them receive a proportion of any future transfer fee.

Chalobah will follow Cucurella, Tyrique George and Andrey Santos out of Stamford Bridge as the squad is trimmed and reshaped around Alonso’s demands.

A reset after a dismal season

All of this comes in the shadow of a bruising campaign that ended with Chelsea 10th in the table and miles off the pace. Inside the club, the verdict was blunt: the recruitment model had to change.

The hierarchy accepted that the heavy tilt towards youth and raw potential left the squad short of players capable of dragging the team through tight title-race moments. The response has been decisive. Chelsea broke their transfer record in July to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, a statement deal that underlined their intent to build around proven quality. Argentina international Valentin Barco, signed from Strasbourg on Sunday, added further steel and versatility.

Now, as Chavarria edges closer and the defensive jigsaw takes shape, the picture of Alonso’s Chelsea grows sharper. The question is no longer whether the club will change course. It’s how quickly this new, more seasoned version can climb back to the summit.
