Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk Weighs Loan Options

Chelsea are weighing up loan options for Mykhailo Mudryk as the winger attempts to restart a career that has been on hold for nearly two years.

The 25-year-old has not played a competitive game since November 2024, his progress halted by a four-year suspension after an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. That case has now been resolved by agreement, clearing the way for his return, but leaving a gaping hole in his match fitness and rhythm.

Mudryk has been eased back in during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia, with substitute appearances against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim offering the first glimpses of a player trying to rediscover his edge rather than redefine himself. The cameos were brief, but important: proof that he is back on the pitch, back in a dressing room, back in the conversation.

By the end of the tour, the conversations turned serious. In meetings with the club hierarchy, Mudryk agreed that a loan move before the 1 September transfer deadline would give him the best chance of rebuilding his career away from the immediate pressure of Stamford Bridge.

A switch to Strasbourg has been put on the table, the French club sitting under the same BlueCo ownership umbrella as Chelsea. On paper, it is a neat solution: a controlled environment, a club aligned with Chelsea’s broader project, and a league that has often been kind to wide forwards with pace and flair.

Mudryk, though, has his own ideas. He would rather stay in the Premier League, test himself again against English defences and prove he belongs at the level Chelsea expected when they paid an initial £61m to sign him from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023. That preference has opened the door to interest from other top-flight sides, with several English clubs monitoring the situation.

The market is not limited to England. A number of leading Italian teams have also emerged as possible destinations, sensing an opportunity to revive a high-ceiling talent whose career has stalled more through circumstance than age. For a player still only 25 and under contract at Chelsea until 2031, this is not a last chance, but it does feel like a defining one.

Chelsea now have a delicate call to make. Choose the in-house pathway at Strasbourg, or sanction a move that keeps Mudryk in the Premier League spotlight and potentially accelerates his development for – or away from – their own future plans.
