Xabi Alonso Questions Fernandez's Commitment

Fernandez’s exit follows a difficult spell under manager Xabi Alonso, who recently excluded him from the squad for a Carabao Cup win against Luton Town. Alonso raised concerns about Fernandez’s mindset and readiness before that match.

"We need the players that are in the best situation to play," Alonso said. "We take everything into account – players in good form and those lacking energy or desire. For me, it is very important they want to play and prepare well."

Alonso also revealed a private talk with Fernandez led to the decision to leave him out. "He is a top player," Alonso added, but the relationship appeared strained enough for Chelsea to act swiftly to reinforce their midfield.
