Chelsea's Young Stars Buurman and Thompson Shine on PFA Shortlist

Chelsea’s new generation is not waiting its turn. It’s taking centre stage.

At the heart of that surge are two names now recognised by their peers across the country: Buurman and Thompson, both shortlisted for the PFA’s England Young Player of the Year award after standout debut seasons in blue.

Buurman’s swift rise

Thompson’s relentless impact

If Buurman’s season was about emergence, Thompson’s was about endurance and end product.

Signed last summer from Angel City, the forward wasted no time imposing herself on English football. She featured 33 times during the 2025/26 campaign, the joint-highest total in the Chelsea squad alongside Erin Cuthbert – a statistic that speaks to both trust from the coaching staff and her own durability.

Thompson didn’t just play. She decided games. Nine goals in all competitions made her Chelsea’s second-highest scorer, behind only Sam Kerr, the benchmark for forwards at the club. For a 21-year-old in her first season in England, those numbers carry real weight.

A Chelsea stamp on the shortlist

The PFA’s six-player shortlist, announced today, carries a distinct Chelsea imprint. Two of the six names wear blue, a third of the field coming from a single dressing room that is clearly building for both the present and the future.

Alongside Buurman and Thompson, the other nominees are Laura Blindkilde Brown of Manchester City, Freya Godfrey of London Lionesses, Toko Koga of Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal’s Olivia Smith. Each has carved out their own case across the season, but the presence of two Chelsea players underlines the depth of emerging talent at Kingsmeadow.
