Celtic Break Transfer Record for Champions League Striker Kasper Hogh

Celtic have torn up their transfer ceiling to land Kasper Hogh in a club-record deal that screams ambition from the Parkhead boardroom.

The Scottish champions have thrashed out an agreement worth more than £11million with Bodo/Glimt for the prolific Danish striker, a fee that eclipses the £11m paid for Arne Engels two years ago. With add-ons included, it is the biggest outlay in Celtic’s history and a clear show of faith in Martin O’Neill as he reshapes his attack.

Hogh is expected in Glasgow in the coming days to undergo a medical. If there are no late issues, the 25-year-old will sign a lucrative long-term contract and become the new spearhead of O’Neill’s frontline.

This is not a punt. It is a calculated swing at the Champions League.

Hogh’s numbers in Norway are the stuff that make recruitment departments lean forward. He hit 54 goals and 22 assists in 103 appearances for Bodo/Glimt, but it was his work on the biggest stage that truly turned heads. Last season he scored six times in the Champions League as the Norwegian side surged to the last 16, striking against Sturm Graz, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Sporting Lisbon, and helping himself to a ruthless double against Manchester City.

Those are not flat-track figures. Those are goals scored under floodlights, pressure and pedigree.

Standing 6ft 1in, Hogh offers presence as well as precision, a penalty-box finisher who has already shown he can live with elite defenders. Celtic are gambling that those instincts will translate to Glasgow and beyond.

He will not be doing it alone. Hogh is set to form part of a revamped £17m front line alongside Camilo Duran, the £6m arrival from Qarabag. Duran also made his mark in Europe’s top competition last season, rattling in five goals for the Azerbaijani champions. Between them, O’Neill now has two forwards who know what it is to trouble Champions League defences, not just domestic ones.

The timing is no coincidence. Celtic have moved aggressively after Daizen Maeda’s departure to Ipswich Town, a deal that has banked an initial £8m with a further £2m in potential add-ons. That sale has effectively underwritten the first wave of O’Neill’s rebuild and opened the door to a more powerful, more varied attacking unit.

The recruitment drive is not stopping at the front line. Talks remain active with Bundesliga side Paderborn over a £4m move for midfielder Mika Baur, as Celtic look to add legs and craft in the middle of the park. Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan is also on the radar, with the club pushing to get more business completed before next month’s Champions League play-off.

The message from the boardroom is blunt and unmistakable: domestic dominance is no longer enough. Celtic want to walk into those play-offs with a squad built to do more than just make up the numbers. With a record-breaking deal for a striker who has already blooded his boots against Europe’s elite, they have just raised the bar on what this season should look like.
