Celtic Criticizes Monday Night Season Opener

Celtic have condemned the decision to start their Scottish Premiership title defence on a Monday night, after being told the league had “no choice” but to move their opening fixture because of the Commonwealth Games and two Calvin Harris concerts.

The champions will begin the 2026-27 campaign at home to Dundee on 3 August, with a 19:30 BST kick-off, rather than at the weekend as they had pushed for.

Champions pushed back by city schedule

Glasgow’s crowded events calendar has driven the call. Cycling at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is scheduled for the Sir Chris Hoy Arena, which sits next door to Celtic Park, across the weekend of 1 and 2 August. At the same time, Calvin Harris will play two major shows at Hampden Park.

Between the Games, the concerts and the usual policing and transport demands wrapped around them, Celtic say they lobbied hard for a traditional weekend slot but were rebuffed.

The club revealed they made “repeated representations” to the SPFL and Police Scotland in an attempt to secure a Saturday or Sunday date, arguing that the occasion merited it on sporting and supporter grounds.

Their stance is blunt: a season opener for the champions, in front of a full house, should not be shunted to a Monday night.

Celtic also confirmed they had at least managed to drag the kick-off forward. The match had initially been set for a later time, but the club negotiated an earlier start to ease travel for supporters coming from Ireland.

TV era shapes opening weekend

Every game on the Premiership’s opening weekend will be broadcast live, and the schedule underlines how television and city logistics now share control of the calendar.

The new season begins on Friday, 31 July, when Dundee United host Rangers at 20:00, a high-profile curtain-raiser under the lights.

Saturday brings a double-header. Falkirk face St Mirren at 15:00, before last season’s runners-up Hearts travel to Aberdeen for a 17:30 kick-off.

By the time Celtic finally walk out to defend their crown on Monday night, the rest of the league will already have laid down their first markers. The champions, and their supporters, will feel they should have been part of that story at the weekend, not watching it unfold from the sidelines.
