Caroline Weir hit a ruthless hat-trick as Scotland dismantled Israel 6-0 in Budapest, a statement win that drags them to the brink of top spot in their Women’s World Cup qualifying group and a return to League A in the Nations League.

It was Weir’s night, and Scotland built everything around her. The Real Madrid midfielder scored three, created another and dictated the tempo, yet the performance came with a jarring caveat: Erin Cuthbert, scorer of the opener, was carried off late on with what looked a serious knee injury.

Weir pulls the strings

The margin now stands at plus 18, a full 10 better than Belgium, who still have two matches to come against bottom side Luxembourg.

For Melissa Andreatta, the numbers are exactly where she wanted them. Top of League B Group 4 is now within reach, and with it a crucial seeding for the qualification play-offs. With Israel to face again next week, Scotland know another emphatic result could lock that position in.

Yet the sight of Cuthbert being carried off late in the game cut through the celebrations. The Chelsea midfielder had set the tone with her goal and her aggression off the ball, only for her night to end in obvious pain and concern.

Scotland left Budapest with six goals, a hat-trick hero and a goal difference that suddenly looks like a weapon. The next meeting with Israel will decide how much it all counts – and whether they can chase that finish line without one of their most important players.
