Caoimhin Kelleher: The Goalkeeper Ready for Premier League Stardom

Shay Given has seen enough. In his eyes, Caoimhin Kelleher is no longer the promising understudy at Liverpool. He is the goalkeeper who changes a club.

The former Newcastle and Republic of Ireland No 1 believes Brentford’s on-loan keeper is ready to walk into a starting role at a major Premier League side – and he has two in mind.

Chelsea and Newcastle on alert

“Could Chelsea or Newcastle come in for Kelleher this summer? Possibly,” Given said in an interview with BOYLE Sports. The key, he stressed, lies not in London or on Tyneside, but back at Anfield. “It would depend on Liverpool and whether they can activate any sort of clause to sign him themselves to stop another club picking him up.”

Liverpool’s goalkeeping picture remains anchored by Alisson, still the undisputed first choice. As long as the Brazilian stays, Given struggles to see a path for Kelleher to return as a starter.

“A lot will depend on Allison because you wouldn't bring Kelleher back right now if Alisson's staying for the next two seasons,” he said. That reality, in his view, opens the door for others. “I think Kelleher would be well-suited for Newcastle right now. I think he'd be well suited for Chelsea too.”

Chelsea, in particular, puzzle him.

“Chelsea are the club who have surprised me a little bit by not bringing someone in,” Given admitted, before adding that his criticism does not come from a dislike of their current No 1. “I say that as someone who does like Robert Sanchez.”

Sanchez under the microscope

Given’s respect for Sanchez comes with a sharp caveat. The Spaniard’s ceiling is high. So, too, is the risk.

“I stuck up for him a lot last season,” Given said, “but he does keep going over old ground with some of the mistakes he makes.” The pattern is familiar: spectacular save, followed by a wild decision.

“He can pull off some unbelievable saves and you think this guy’s the real deal,” Given continued, “only for him to have a mad rush of blood to the head at the edge of the box and halve someone in two.”

Chelsea have been here before. Since 2018 they have poured money into solving the goalkeeping position and still find themselves searching for stability. Given is convinced that this window has to be different.

“I feel that signing a new goalkeeper is something that could happen at Chelsea this summer,” he said. “And if it’s not Kelleher maybe it’ll be someone else, but that’s a position they need to strengthen in this window, not the next window, but now.”

With Xabi Alonso now in charge at Stamford Bridge, the judgement on Sanchez’s future becomes even more intriguing. “Xabi Alonso is in place now and he might have seen enough from Robert Sanchez. I’m not sure,” Given admitted. What he is sure about is the shared need. “I definitely think Newcastle and Chelsea want the strength in that position and Kelleher would be a good signing for either of them.”

Liverpool’s new man vs the old understudy

Liverpool have already moved in the market, securing Georgian international Giorgi Mamardashvili. The 23-year-old arrives with a strong reputation and the expectation of eventually challenging for the No 1 shirt. Given is not ready to anoint him as Alisson’s heir.

“Mamardashvili arrived at Liverpool with a big reputation and he’s done okay so far,” he said, “but I’m still not convinced that he is going to be the future number one after Alisson.”

Kelleher, by contrast, has already passed tests that matter to a former elite goalkeeper. “I am now even more convinced about Kelleher given he’s proven he can be number one at Brentford and he obviously knows Liverpool inside and out.”

What separates Kelleher, in Given’s mind, is not just shot-stopping, but temperament.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that he could come back to the club and what I like about Kelleher is that he brings a real calmness to everything he does,” Given said. “He never seems fazed or fluffed up about anything. He could make the best save in the world and just get up like nothing has happened and set about organising his defenders for a corner.”

No drama. No fuss. Just presence.

Proving he belongs

At Brentford, Kelleher has finally stepped out from behind Alisson’s shadow and into the grind of weekly Premier League football. Given sees a goalkeeper not just coping with that pressure, but growing under it.

“I think he’ll continue to develop as a player. I hope he stays at Brentford for at least another season. It’ll do him no harm,” the former Newcastle man said. Regular football, he insists, has revealed a different side of the Irishman.

“He’s proving to everyone that he has what it takes to play regularly every week, and that comes with a different side of pressure than being on the bench and coming in and out of the team.”

The work, crucially, does not stop when the whistle blows.

“He’s already working on other stuff away from the pitch, in the gym and training, to build up his upper body strength to improve and get better, and he will,” Given added. “I only see positive things for the future for Caoimhin.”

Chelsea crave reliability after too many “rush of blood” moments. Newcastle are searching for the next piece to push them forward. Liverpool must decide whether to back the new arrival or return to the old apprentice who never flinched.

Kelleher stands in the middle of it all, calm as ever, waiting for one of these clubs to decide just how much they really value a goalkeeper who simply does not blink.
