The suggestion is that Fernandes is open to the move and that United are informally asking for closer to £64m, a price that would nudge above the clause and test Gala’s ambition.

Whether the Turkish champions are prepared to go that far is another matter. Interest is real; intent is less clear.

Galatasaray weigh their options

Galatasaray are hunting for an attacking midfielder and have cast a wide net. They have made contact with Real Madrid over Brahim Diaz. They are tracking Turkey international Can Uzun at Eintracht Frankfurt. There are even whispers of exploring a loan for Phil Foden from Manchester City.

Fernandes sits at the top end of that list in terms of profile and impact. He would instantly become the face of their project. But to prise him out of Old Trafford, they may need to commit to a fee that reshapes their entire summer.

For now, the equation is simple: pay the clause, negotiate around United’s higher valuation, or walk away.

United’s gamble

Inside Old Trafford, the stance is more cautious than decisive. There are currently no plans to offer Fernandes a fresh contract before the new season starts. He talked about the obligation to drag the club back to the top of the Premier League and European football, regardless of recent struggles. He framed the current squad as potential “protagonists” in a new chapter, the group that could “turn the page” and restore United to a position where they “fight on all fronts.”

Those are not the words of a player desperate to bolt at the first serious offer. They are the words of a captain who still sees meaning in the badge – even as the market opens around him.

The club’s power brokers are aligned

Inside the club hierarchy, the public message has been consistent. Chief executive Omar Berrada made it clear how highly they value Fernandes, both as a footballer and as a figurehead.

“We’d like him to stay, of course we do. He’s had a great season on the pitch. But more importantly, he’s shown to everybody that he is a great leader; people don’t see what he does outside of the pitch. He understands the values of the club really well, and I think we’ve seen him help a lot of the younger signings.”

That endorsement matters. Fernandes is not just a creator of chances and goals; he is the standard-bearer in the dressing room, the one younger players watch and follow.

On the football side, the message has been the same. Asked on the final day of the season whether Fernandes would stay, Michael Carrick replied: “I’ve got no reason to think otherwise. We’ve loved what he’s done, and he loves being here, I think you can see that. He wanted to stay on [the pitch]. He wants to stay on every single game because he’s enjoying his football, which is fantastic.”
