Breel Embolo Joins Switzerland’s World Cup Squad After Visa Approval

Breel Embolo will finally join up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after a late visa approval ended an anxious wait for one of Murat Yakin’s key forwards.

The Swiss football federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, days after his team-mates flew out to their pre-tournament base in California without him.

From boarding gate to back office

Embolo had been due to travel with the rest of the squad on Tuesday, only for his ESTA travel authorisation to be pulled for further review shortly before departure. While the rest of the Swiss party settled into camp on the West Coast, he stayed behind in Switzerland, stuck in a bureaucratic limbo rather than on the training pitch.

The delay forced the federation into a holding pattern of its own, planning sessions and tactical drills without knowing when – or even if – one of their primary attacking options would be cleared to enter the U.S.

That uncertainty has now lifted.

“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo's visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening,” the federation said in a statement, confirming the outcome they had been waiting for all week.

Legal history under the microscope

The holdup was not administrative in name only. American authorities ordered extra checks, prompting Embolo to attend an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday as officials scrutinised documents linked to a legal case dating back to a 2018 altercation in Basel.

U.S. officials also requested court records tied to a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats, which led to a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year. The Swiss federation stressed that the matter had already run its course through the domestic legal system, but it still triggered heightened scrutiny under U.S. entry rules.

Only once those records had been reviewed did the green light arrive.

Focus back on the pitch

For Switzerland, the timing matters. With the World Cup countdown already under way, Yakin can now fold Embolo back into full preparations, restoring a focal point in attack and a familiar presence in the dressing room.

The paperwork is done. The questions at the border have been answered.

Now the only examination Embolo faces will come on the pitch, under the harsher but far more familiar glare of a World Cup.
