Bochum’s Ruhrstadion: Tension Erupts in 2. Bundesliga Opener

The new 2. Bundesliga season had barely taken its first breath when the familiar tension of Bochum’s Ruhrstadion spilled over from the stands and onto the pitch.

The opening game of the 2026/27 campaign had only just settled into rhythm when, after a little more than 15 minutes, referee Wolfgang Haslberger brought it all to an abrupt halt. No injury. No VAR check. No floodlight failure.

According to the stadium announcer, a protest banner from the travelling Hertha supporters had been draped over an emergency exit gate in the away section – a red line for stadium safety officers and, in Bochum, an all-too-familiar flashpoint. Once the issue was flagged, Haslberger acted quickly. After two public announcements, he summoned the players to the edge of the pitch and formally suspended the match.

The noise didn’t drop. It changed. Whistles, shouts, pockets of confusion. On the touchline and near the away end, club officials and security staff moved into hurried discussions, trying to defuse a situation that had nothing to do with tactics or team selection, yet threatened to overshadow the league’s curtain-raiser.

The delay, though, never grew into a full-blown stoppage saga. After around five minutes of talks and visible gesturing between stewards and the Hertha block, the banner came down. The emergency exit stood clear again. Haslberger checked with his assistants, cast a final glance towards the problematic area, and signalled for play to restart.

The ball rolled once more, the 2. Bundesliga season finally allowed to breathe – with an early reminder that in German football, the stands can change the script in an instant.
