Ben White Ruled Out for Season: Major Blow to Arsenal's Double Bid

Arsenal’s charge for a historic Premier League and Champions League double has taken a brutal hit. Ben White, one of Mikel Arteta’s most reliable lieutenants, will not kick a ball again this season.

The defender left the London Stadium on Sunday with a brace strapped to his right knee after being forced off in the first half of Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 win over West Ham. The result kept their title and European dreams alive. The sight of White hobbling down the tunnel hinted at the cost.

Arteta didn’t sugar-coat it in the aftermath, admitting the injury “didn’t look good at all”. Those fears have now been confirmed.

Season over – and World Cup hopes shattered

Arsenal have announced that the 28-year-old has suffered a serious medial knee ligament injury, ruling him out of their final two league fixtures and the Champions League final against Paris St Germain on May 30.

A club statement laid out the grim diagnosis: “Further to Sunday’s match at West Ham, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that Ben White has sustained a significant medial knee ligament injury, which will rule him out for the remainder of this season.

“Our medical team are now managing Ben’s recovery and rehabilitation programme, with everyone fully focused on supporting the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations.”

For White, the timing could hardly be worse. His resurgence at international level now stalls just as it had restarted. After four years away from the England setup, he had only recently ended his self-imposed exile, featuring in the national team’s latest matches against Uruguay and Japan. Those performances had thrust him back into the World Cup conversation. This injury almost certainly ends that prospect.

Arteta’s right-back puzzle

On the pitch, the implications are immediate and severe. White has been a mainstay at right-back, a key outlet in possession and a defensive anchor in Arsenal’s back line. Losing him now, with the season balanced on a knife edge, leaves Arteta with a serious selection dilemma.

Arsenal still face pivotal league games against Burnley and Crystal Palace before that showdown with PSG. Jurrien Timber, the obvious replacement, remains sidelined with a groin problem and has already missed two months. There is no clarity yet on whether he can feature before the campaign ends.

The pressure now shifts to the understudies. Cristhian Mosquera is expected to step in, asked to hold his nerve in the most unforgiving of circumstances. Declan Rice has also filled in as an emergency right-back this season, and that option may return to the table if Arteta looks to shuffle his pack in the run-in.

White’s injury strips Arsenal of experience, versatility and calm in a position that underpins their entire structure. The stakes could hardly be higher. With trophies on the line and PSG looming, Arteta must find a solution on the fly – and hope his patched-up back line can carry them over the finish line.
