Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers: A New Chapter in His Career

Ben Godfrey’s career has taken him from York to Norwich, from the Premier League glare at Everton to the tactical grind of Serie A with Atalanta. Now, at 28, it leads him to Rangers – and a club that expects its defenders to do far more than simply survive.

The England international has joined ahead of the 2026/27 campaign on a deal that includes an option to make the move permanent next summer. For a player who has already lived several footballing lives, this feels like a decisive chapter.

He arrives with the kind of CV that turns heads in any dressing room. A York City academy product, Godfrey climbed from his hometown club to Norwich City’s youth ranks, then forced his way into the Canaries’ first team. By 2018/19 he was no longer a prospect but a pillar, playing a central role in Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League and proving he could handle the pressure of a season where every mistake is magnified.

That form carried him to Everton in the summer of 2020. His debut came in one of English football’s fiercest fixtures, a 2-2 Merseyside derby that offered no hiding place. Across more than 100 Premier League appearances, Godfrey built a reputation as a strong, combative defender with the athleticism to live with elite forwards and the versatility to operate across the back line.

His journey then took a continental turn. In 2024 he moved to Atalanta, swapping English intensity for Italian nuance in Serie A. The second half of last season saw him sent out on loan to Brøndby in the Danish Superliga, another test of adaptability, another new league to decode.

Now comes Scotland, and the demands of a club where winning is non-negotiable.

On signing, Godfrey made it clear he understands the scale of what he is walking into. “I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said, the excitement obvious. His ambition matched the mood. “I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”

Those words will land well with a support that measures players not just by their pedigree, but by their appetite for the fight ahead.

Manager Derek McInnes, for his part, made it clear this is no vanity signing built on reputation alone. “Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him,” he said, underlining exactly why the club moved for him.

McInnes highlighted the blend of physicality and composure that has defined Godfrey at his best. “He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”

Rangers are not signing a prospect. They are signing a defender hardened by promotion chases, relegation battles, European ambitions and the unforgiving rhythm of top-flight football in three different countries. The option to make the deal permanent next summer gives the club flexibility, but it also throws down a challenge to the player: prove you belong here for the long haul.

Godfrey has already shown he can climb from York to the Premier League and beyond. The question now is whether he can turn that experience into the kind of commanding presence that anchors a Rangers back line in a season where only trophies will do.
