Bayern Munich's Pursuit of Anthony Gordon Amid Nubel's Key Role

Bayern Munich have identified Anthony Gordon as a priority attacking signing – but they don’t have the cash to simply write a cheque and walk away with Newcastle’s winger. So they are trying something more complicated, more delicate, and potentially season-defining.

They want to pay with a goalkeeper.

Nubel as the bargaining chip

According to Bild, Bayern are determined to land Gordon yet currently lack the liquidity to meet Newcastle’s steep valuation in full. The solution on the table is Alexander Nubel, fresh from an impressive loan at Stuttgart and now being lined up as a makeweight in a blockbuster part-exchange.

The timing is no coincidence. At St James’ Park, the search for a new No 1 has already begun. Nick Pope is edging towards the exit, and Newcastle’s hierarchy are scouring the market for a successor. A 29-year-old German international with Bundesliga pedigree and years left at the top instantly becomes an intriguing option.

Nubel is due back at the Allianz Arena this summer and remains under contract with Bayern until June 2030. On paper, that looks like security. In reality, his path in Munich is blocked.

Manuel Neuer stays the undisputed reference point. Jonas Urbig and Sven Ulreich round out a settled goalkeeping group. Nubel, for all his potential, is surplus.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund did not dress it up. "We've had discussions with his management and Alex is also aware of our plans," he said. "We're heading into next season with this trio of goalkeepers; that's the plan."

In other words: Nubel must move, and Bayern intend to turn that necessity into leverage.

Bayern’s attacking plan

The push for Gordon also fits neatly into Bayern’s wider transfer strategy. The club have been open about their intention to add firepower – if the numbers work.

“We agree that we will sign an attacking player if he is affordable,” sporting director Max Eberl said before the DFB Cup final win against Stuttgart in Berlin, speaking at a Bild event. “We had a very good discussion and hope that we can make progress.”

That line is telling. Bayern want an attacker, they have a clear target, but they are operating within strict financial parameters. Gordon, with Premier League experience, pace, and end product, ticks the sporting boxes. The challenge is building a package that Newcastle will actually accept.

Enter Nubel.

Newcastle’s dilemma

For Newcastle, the proposal cuts right to the heart of their summer planning.

Eddie Howe needs an immediate, top-level upgrade in goal if Pope departs. The club cannot afford to get that call wrong, not with European ambitions and domestic expectations rising. Nubel offers experience at a high level, a long contract that could be reshaped, and a chance to lock down the position for several years.

But the cost would be brutal: losing Gordon, one of their most dynamic attackers and a fan favourite, to Bayern.

Newcastle are not short of options between the posts. They are assessing younger alternatives, including Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser, as they weigh up the profile they want: established and ready-made, or younger and mouldable.

The decision is not just tactical. It is emotional, financial, and symbolic. Trading Gordon for a goalkeeper, even one of Nubel’s calibre, would reshape the squad’s balance and the club’s trajectory.

A deal on World Cup time

Any resolution is unlikely to come quickly. Nubel is currently away with Germany at the World Cup in North America, his focus fixed on the national team. That tournament schedule slows negotiations, complicates medicals, and pushes serious talks deeper into the window.

On Tyneside, the clock will feel like it’s ticking faster. Bayern’s interest is real, their goalkeeping hierarchy is already set, and their need for an attacker is clear. Newcastle’s need is different but just as urgent: an elite defensive anchor, without surrendering too much of the threat that has made them so dangerous going forward.

At some point, someone will blink.

The question is whether it’s Bayern, by finding another way to fund Gordon, or Newcastle, by deciding that Nubel is worth the price of tearing one of their key attacking pieces out of Howe’s system.
