Bardsley Challenges Rashford and Urges Carrick to Find New Midfield Anchor

Phil Bardsley has seen enough dressing rooms to know when a player is at a crossroads. Looking at Manchester United under Michael Carrick, he sees one name looming over the summer: Marcus Rashford.

The former United and Scotland defender believes Rashford’s Old Trafford future now rests on something far more fragile than talent or tactics – the trust of the supporters.

“If Manchester United were to bring back the Marcus Rashford we saw at Barcelona last season, you’d take him back in a heartbeat, but we’d need to see it consistently,” Bardsley told Casinolyze.

That’s the crux of it. The version that lit up Spain? United would roll out the red carpet. The version that drifted through games in Manchester? Far less welcome.

Bardsley accepts Rashford showed his quality during his loan spell at Barcelona. The pace, the movement, the end product – it was all there again. But he is adamant that reproducing that level week after week, under the harsher glare of Old Trafford, is what will define whether Rashford truly comes home or simply returns.

“The problem Rashford has is he needs to win the trust back of some fans,” Bardsley said. “I don’t know how it would sit with them to see him back in the team but if he’s got a clean slate from Michael Carrick, and he’s like the Rashford of old, he’s a player who can deliver United trophies.”

That “clean slate” line is telling. Carrick, still shaping the squad in his own image, now has a decision to make: rebuild Rashford as a central figure or move on from a forward who has become a lightning rod for frustration. Bardsley’s view is clear – if Carrick can tap into the hunger and joy that once defined Rashford, United have a match-winner on their hands again.

“If Michael can get him back to enjoying his football at United, then he’d be another brilliant player,” Bardsley continued, before landing a pointed question. “But I don’t know why you wouldn’t already be enjoying your football playing for the biggest club in the world? It all depends on which Marcus Rashford turns up, and whether he does turn up in a United shirt.”

That last line cuts through the noise. This isn’t about potential anymore. It’s about reliability. Which Rashford turns up? The one from Barcelona, or the one some United fans have run out of patience with?

A call for balance: “Go and find another Darren Fletcher”

Rashford isn’t the only concern in Bardsley’s mind. When he looks at United’s midfield, he sees craft, youth, and flair – but not enough grit.

“I think Manchester United need to go and get a more defensively-minded player in midfield,” he said.

The names roll off the tongue: Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, Bruno Fernandes. Technicians, creators, ball-players. What they lack is the old-school anchor Bardsley once watched up close.

“I think they need to go and find another Darren Fletcher now,” he added.

That comparison is no accident. Fletcher was the glue in title-winning midfields: disciplined, combative, and happy to let others take the headlines while he did the dirty work.

Bardsley believes United may already have a solution in mind. On-loan midfielder Sékou Kone, he says, is exactly the type of presence Carrick’s side is missing.

“I really like Sékou Kone,” Bardsley said. “He’s the type of player who would probably offer something a little bit different to the rest of the players United already have to anchor the midfield and give the other boys more license to roam forward and take risks knowing that he has their back, ready to get stuck in.”

That image is vivid: Kone holding the fort, Mainoo driving, Fernandes drifting into pockets, Tielemans dictating, Santos emerging. One destroyer, several creators, and a structure that finally makes sense.

For Bardsley, United’s next step under Carrick looks brutally simple. Restore Rashford to the level he hit in Barcelona – and keep him there. Then drop a Fletcher-type figure like Kone behind a talented midfield to let them breathe.

If Carrick can solve both puzzles, United’s spine starts to look like a contender’s again. If he can’t, the questions around Rashford, and the balance of this squad, will only get louder.
