Bardghji’s ACL Injury Halts Transfer Plans and Barcelona Career
Barcelona’s summer planning took a brutal hit on Tuesday as the club confirmed that winger Bardghji has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that wrecks his hopes of a move before the transfer window closes on September 1.
The 20-year-old Sweden international went down in training on Monday. Initial fears were quickly confirmed by medical tests: another serious ligament tear, the same knee, and surgery scheduled in the coming days. Months out. Season, effectively, gone.
From exit talks to the treatment table
The timing could hardly be harsher. Bardghji had been actively preparing for a transfer after clear conversations with Barcelona’s hierarchy. He knew where he stood. According to ESPN, coach Hansi Flick had been blunt with the youngster: first‑team minutes would be extremely scarce in the upcoming campaign.
With Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi arriving to swell the attacking options, Bardghji’s path to the pitch was narrowing by the week. A move was no longer just an option; it was the logical next step.
Barcelona had already fielded enquiries from across Europe, including interest from Premier League clubs. Negotiations were expected to ramp up as the window entered its decisive phase. Instead, the story turned on a single step in a training drill.
Protected from friendlies, injured in training
In an attempt to shield the player from exactly this kind of scenario, Barcelona had left Bardghji out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. The idea was simple: avoid any unnecessary risk while talks gathered pace.
The irony is cruel. Rested for the games, injured in training.
Now, any transfer is off the table. With the window closing on September 1, no club will gamble on a player facing a long rehabilitation from a second ACL tear in the same knee. The “for sale” sign comes down, not because Barcelona changed their mind, but because fate intervened.
A second major setback in a young career
This is not Bardghji’s first battle with this injury. He suffered the same torn ACL in his right knee while at Copenhagen in 2024. Barcelona still believed in his upside, moving last summer to sign him for around €2 million.
His debut season in Spain brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals. The numbers tell a partial story: most of those minutes came from the bench, flashes of promise rather than a sustained run as a starter. The club’s summer recruitment suggested that even those cameo roles were under threat.
Now the equation changes again. Not in the way he or the club had planned.
Recovery in Barcelona, future on hold
Instead of a fresh start elsewhere in Europe, Bardghji will spend the coming season in Barcelona’s medical and rehabilitation facilities, working his way back from a second major knee injury before his 21st birthday. The surgery is imminent; the long, lonely grind follows.
The transfer market will move on without him. Squads will be finalised, attacking hierarchies will settle, and by the time Bardghji returns, the landscape could look very different.
For a player once earmarked for a new chapter this summer, the challenge has shifted. Not to win a place, or secure a move, but simply to come back again from the same knee, the same ligament, and prove that this is a detour in his career, not its defining line.
