Barcelona's Bardghji Faces Second ACL Tear, Impacting Career and Transfer Prospects

Barcelona’s summer plans took a brutal twist on Tuesday as the club confirmed that forward Bardghji has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a devastating injury that wrecks both his season and any chance of a move before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The 20-year-old Sweden international went down during a training session on Monday. Initial fears were quickly confirmed by medical tests: a severe ACL tear, surgery required in the coming days, and a long spell out of action ahead.

For Bardghji, the timing could hardly be worse.

From exit talks to the treatment room

Only days earlier, coach Hansi Flick had told the winger he should look for a new club, with first-team opportunities at Barcelona expected to be scarce this season. According to ESPN, Flick was transparent with the youngster: breaking into the starting XI would be extremely difficult in the upcoming campaign.

So Bardghji prepared for a move. Barcelona listened to enquiries from across Europe, including interest from the Premier League, and the expectation around the club was that negotiations would accelerate as the window entered its final weeks.

The irony is cruel. To shield him from exactly this kind of risk, Barcelona had left him out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. The plan was to protect an asset on the verge of a transfer.

The injury still came. Not in a match, but in training.

A second major knee blow

This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this particular nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same serious injury while at Copenhagen in 2024.

Barcelona signed him last summer from the Danish club for around €2 million, a low-cost investment in a high-upside talent. In his debut season in Spain, he made 28 appearances across all competitions and scored two goals. The numbers told only part of the story: most of those minutes came from the bench, and his role was already limited.

This summer’s business threatened to squeeze him further. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi ramped up competition in the attacking positions, pushing Bardghji down the pecking order just as he reached the age where regular football becomes non-negotiable for development.

A transfer was not just an option. It was the pathway.

Window shuts, options vanish

That path has now closed. With the ACL tear confirmed and surgery imminent, any potential move before the September 1 deadline is off the table. No club is going to take on a long-term knee rehabilitation project in the final weeks of the window, and Barcelona know it.

Instead of packing for a new league and a fresh start, Bardghji will remain in Catalonia, beginning a long rehabilitation programme at the club’s facilities. The upcoming campaign, which was supposed to be about a breakout elsewhere, will now be spent in recovery rooms, gyms and controlled training sessions.

For a 20-year-old who had just been told to find his future away from Barcelona, the message has flipped overnight. He stays. Not by choice, but by circumstance.

The task in front of him is stark and simple: rebuild the same knee, for the second time, and try to salvage the career trajectory that once seemed to be accelerating across Europe.
