Barcelona's Transfer Plans Disrupted as Álvarez and João Pedro Deals Collapse

Barcelona’s grand plan for a new No 9 has hit a wall. Twice.

The club have effectively abandoned their pursuits of Julián Álvarez and João Pedro, a double setback that forces Deco and Hansi Flick to redraw their attacking blueprint for the post-Robert Lewandowski era.

Álvarez: the priority that slipped away

For weeks, the internal message at Barça was clear: the next centre-forward had to be a statement signing, someone to lead the line and anchor Flick’s new project. Julián Álvarez sat at the top of that list.

The sporting department explored a deal with Atletico Madrid, testing the waters around a forward who, crucially, was open to a change of scenery. Álvarez signalled that he would be willing to listen if a serious offer arrived. That alone gave Barcelona hope. A top-level, versatile striker with Champions League pedigree, interested in the project and the role on offer.

Then reality intervened.

Once talks moved from theory to numbers, Barcelona ran into a familiar barrier: price. Atletico’s financial demands pushed any realistic agreement out of reach. Under current market conditions and Barça’s own economic constraints, the operation stopped making sense.

The optimism that had built around Álvarez faded quickly. The same report now suggests the Argentine is leaning towards staying in Madrid for at least one more season, postponing any big decision on his future. For Barcelona, that door has effectively closed.

João Pedro: admiration meets a brick wall

If the Álvarez chase was blocked by money, the João Pedro pursuit hit something even firmer: refusal.

Barcelona’s admiration for the Brazilian is no secret. His profile fits the club’s idea of a modern forward – technical, mobile, with the ability to operate across the front line and grow inside a long-term Champions League project. From the player’s side, there was an openness to that kind of step, a move into a more stable, elite environment.

Chelsea shut it down instantly.

The London club have told Barça that João Pedro is not for sale. Not at €100 million. Not at €150 million. Not at any figure. Internally, Chelsea consider him untouchable, a core piece of their own rebuild, and they have refused to even entertain the possibility of negotiations.

Barcelona had hoped that the player’s interest might eventually apply some pressure, creating a small crack in Chelsea’s stance. Instead, the message from England has stayed firm: there will be no talks, no matter how far the Catalans are willing to go in terms of commitment.

The result is the same as with Álvarez, but the route there has been different – and just as frustrating.

Deco and Flick back to the drawing board

Two primary targets. Two closed doors.

Inside the sporting department, that reality has forced a reset. Deco and Flick must now pivot towards alternative options, with the clock ticking on a summer in which the club had hoped to deliver a new reference point in attack after Lewandowski’s departure.

The idea of a marquee No 9 leading the new era has not changed. The market, though, has just reminded Barcelona how little margin for error they have.

The question now is simple and unforgiving: in a window where the first-choice solutions have vanished, can Barça still find a forward capable of carrying the weight of a project that refuses to slow down?
