Barcelona Target Rodri as Atlético Stands Firm on Álvarez

Barcelona have stepped into Real Madrid’s pursuit of Rodri, sensing an opening in a transfer saga that could reshape the heart of two midfields – and possibly tilt the balance of power in Spain. At the same time, their long-running attempt to prise Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid has hit a brick wall.

Barça move into Rodri battle

Rodri, Spain’s World Cup-winning captain and Golden Ball winner, has entered the final year of his Manchester City contract. City still want him to sign fresh terms, but are thought to be prepared to sell for around £60m if no agreement is reached.

Real Madrid have been locked in talks with Rodri and his camp for weeks without closing a deal. That hesitation has encouraged Barcelona, who have now formally registered their interest in the 30-year-old.

The need is clear. Frenkie de Jong’s knee injury, expected to sideline him for several months, has left a hole in the centre of Xavi’s midfield. Barça see Rodri as the ideal plug: a metronome with authority, experience and a recent World Cup on his CV.

Real, though, have their own calculations to make. They have already committed a club-record £115m to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig and are working on a lucrative contract extension for Vinícius Júnior to fend off serious interest from Arsenal. Any move for Rodri would likely require sales first.

City reshuffle as Rodri recovers

Rodri’s situation is complicated further by his fitness. He has undergone minor back surgery and will miss most of Manchester City’s pre-season programme, a disruption to Pep Guardiola’s usual carefully plotted summer.

City are already planning around possible change. They have brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m, a sizeable outlay that underlines their willingness to refresh the squad. Talks continue with Lille over 18-year-old Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, another sign that the champions are bracing for a new-look engine room.

For now, City have not given up on keeping Rodri. But with two Spanish giants circling and the clock ticking on his contract, control of the situation is starting to slip from their grasp.

Atlético dig in over Julián Álvarez

If Barcelona sense opportunity with Rodri, they are meeting pure resistance with Julián Álvarez.

Following Robert Lewandowski’s departure, Barça have identified Álvarez as their primary centre-forward target and have pursued him all summer. Atlético’s stance could not be clearer: the Argentina striker is not for sale, at any price.

That has not stopped Barcelona trying. Sporting director Deco travelled to Madrid on Wednesday for talks with Álvarez’s representatives, a move that underlined just how determined the Catalan club are to test Atlético’s resolve.

The next flashpoint is already marked on the calendar. All eyes will be on Monday, when the 26-year-old former Manchester City forward is due to report back for pre-season training. If he walks through the gates as normal, Atlético’s hard line holds. If he hesitates, or pushes for a move, the story changes.

Arsenal are also monitoring the situation, maintaining their interest in Álvarez as they scan the market for an elite forward. For now, though, Atlético are standing firm, and Barcelona are left juggling one possible raid on Manchester City with another that depends on a player willing to force the issue himself.
