Eli Junior Kroupi, one of the standout young forwards in the Premier League last season and a serious alternative on Barcelona’s shortlist, now faces up to four months on the sidelines after suffering a fractured fifth metatarsal during Bournemouth’s pre-season camp in Austria.

The 20-year-old underwent surgery on Wednesday, according to The Athletic, drawing a hard line through the opening months of his season. The nature of the injury will ring alarm bells in Barcelona as well: it is the same problem that kept Fermín López out at the end of last season, just before the World Cup.

The prognosis is brutal in its clarity. Kroupi is expected to miss between three and four months of action, with a realistic return not anticipated before late October or November, depending on how his recovery progresses.

For a player on his trajectory, that is a major interruption.

Last season was his breakout. In his first full campaign on the south coast, Kroupi hit 13 Premier League goals, five of them in the final eight games as Bournemouth surged to an impressive finish. He didn’t just score; he decided matches, becoming Andoni Iraola’s primary reference in attack and finishing as the club’s top scorer.

His goals helped drive Bournemouth into the UEFA Europa League, a landmark achievement for the club and a stage that seemed tailor-made for a young forward on the rise. Naturally, the rest of Europe took note. Scouts had already filed their reports; Barcelona went further.

Barcelona’s Plan B suddenly on hold

The timing of the injury could hardly be worse from a Catalan perspective.

Barcelona had identified the France Under-21 international as one of their preferred alternatives if a move for Julián Álvarez failed to materialise. Behind the scenes, the interest was serious. Reports indicated that the club had already submitted two bids for Kroupi, both turned down by Bournemouth, who have been unwavering in their stance: they do not want to sell one of their brightest young assets.

Barcelona’s sporting department liked what they saw. Kroupi’s age, ceiling, and his ability to operate as a true central striker all aligned with Hansi Flick’s long-term blueprint for the attack. With Kroupi ruled out for the opening stretch of the season, Barcelona face a decision they did not expect to confront this late in the window. A forward targeted to lead the line next season would not be available until deep into the autumn, and even then would be returning from a significant layoff.

For a club that needs immediate impact in the No 9 position, that matters.

Barcelona’s pursuit of Álvarez remains the central thread of their attacking rebuild. But Kroupi was one of the strongest fallback options if that move collapsed. His injury forces a rethink.

Do they persist with a long-term view and continue to push for a player who cannot help them until mid-season at best? Or does the urgency of the present – the need to arm Flick with a functioning, fit centre-forward from day one – push them toward a different name entirely before the window closes?

For Bournemouth, the blow is more straightforward but no less severe. They lose their leading scorer and one of the league’s most promising young attackers just as they prepare for a Europa League campaign that was shaped in large part by his goals. For Kroupi himself, the injury halts a rapid ascent that had put him on the radar of Europe’s elite.
