Barcelona Pursues Rashford Amid United's €30m Demand

Barcelona’s pursuit of Marcus Rashford has moved from flirtation to full-on courtship, but one number refuses to budge: €30m.

After a highly productive loan spell in Spain, the Blaugrana are pushing to make the England forward’s stay permanent and, according to talkSPORT, are preparing fresh talks with Manchester United well before the 2026 World Cup. Rashford’s case is strong. Fourteen goals, fourteen assists, forty-nine appearances – enough to convince Hansi Flick that this is not a short-term fling but a key piece of his long-term attack.

Personal terms sorted, problem still to come

On the player’s side, the road is clear. Barcelona have reportedly agreed personal terms with Rashford, who is ready to accept a restructured deal and a reduced salary to get the move done. He wants the project, not the pay packet.

The stumbling block sits in Manchester.

United are refusing to soften their stance on the transfer fee. The Premier League club expect Barcelona to trigger the €30m (£26m) purchase option written into the original loan agreement and have no interest in sanctioning another temporary arrangement. From Old Trafford’s point of view, this summer is the time for a clean break.

United want a clean cut

The message from United is blunt: Rashford’s chapter at the club should end permanently. As part of a broader squad rebuild, they want his wages off the books and clarity over their forward line. Barcelona sporting director Deco has tested the boundaries, exploring different structures – another loan, a conditional obligation to buy, creative add-ons – but United have pushed those ideas back across the table.

Rashford’s contract situation adds urgency. His wage increase triggered by Champions League qualification has reportedly intensified United’s desire to cash in rather than carry a heavy salary into another season.

Flick’s priority, Barca’s dilemma

Despite scouting alternatives, Barcelona still see Rashford as their priority target in attack. Flick is fully committed to bringing him back to Camp Nou and building around his pace, movement and versatility.

Barcelona’s hierarchy believe they hold one important card: Rashford’s own preference. The forward is said to be determined to remain in Spain, showing no appetite for a return to Old Trafford and offering little encouragement to other suitors. That stance narrows United’s market and, in Barcelona’s view, strengthens their hand at the negotiating table.

It has emboldened the Catalan club to keep working on flexible payment ideas – deferred instalments, staggered obligations, or a structure that could push a mandatory purchase into 2027.

No cheap Plan B

Reality still bites. Inside the club there is an acceptance that paying the full €30m may be unavoidable if they truly want Rashford. The alternatives are not bargains either.

Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and Chelsea forward Joao Pedro have both been tracked as potential options, but neither club is inclined to negotiate down from their own high valuations. For Barcelona, that makes a hard €30m clause on a player already integrated into their dressing room look less like a burden and more like a calculated gamble.

The question now is simple: will Barcelona stretch to meet United’s price, or watch a hand-picked forward, perfectly aligned with their manager and their project, slip back out of reach?
