Barcelona Nears Deal for Rodri as Enzo Maresca Provides Update on Man City Midfielder

With the clock winding down before Rodri returns to Manchester City training, Barcelona is reportedly close to securing the midfielder’s transfer. The Spanish club has jumped ahead of Real Madrid in the race to acquire the World Cup winner.

Although Barcelona’s initial offer of $52 million (£38.5 million) was rejected by City, who demand closer to $81 million (£60 million), talks have advanced. Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona’s latest bid includes an upfront payment of $63.5 million (£47 million) plus add-ons, pushing negotiations into their final stage.

Part of the gap between the clubs' valuations might be balanced by a player moving from Barcelona to City. Speculation links City with 19-year-old midfielder Tommy Marqués as a potential component of the deal.

Barcelona's manager, Hansi Flick, is pressing for swift closure on the deal to allow ample time for integrating Rodri into his revamped squad ahead of the new season.

Enzo Maresca Confirms Rodri’s Return Date to Manchester City

Enzo Maresca, involved with Manchester City's preseason, shared details about Rodri’s delayed return following his World Cup success with Spain. Rodri has yet to participate in any preseason activity and missed Maresca’s first preseason session, which wrapped up recently before the Community Shield match against Arsenal on August 16.

Maresca stated, "At the moment, he will be in Manchester. There is no update. On Aug. 14 he will be back." This suggests Rodri will rejoin City two days before their Community Shield clash.

Both clubs stand to gain from a quick agreement. Barcelona desires maximum preparation time with Rodri, while City must plan for life without one of their key midfielders.

City’s Midfield Adjustments During Rodri’s Absence

New signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest has also missed preseason due to international duty with England, similar to Rodri. Consequently, players like Mateo Kovačić, Tijjani Reijnders, and Nico González have logged most of the minutes so far.

Manchester City is expected to pursue a significant replacement for Rodri. Rumors persist about a reunion with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández, who is only now returning to training after competing against Rodri’s Spain in the World Cup final.
