Álvarez pushes for exit as Atlético hold firm on price

The key shift came earlier this month. On May 25, transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported that Álvarez’s camp had again informed Atlético that the striker wants to leave, having already rejected a new deal months ago.

Atlético’s stance is blunt. According to Sky Sports, they want €150 million (£130m, $174m) for the 26‑year‑old. It is a Champions League final price for a Champions League calibre forward: a World Cup winner with Argentina, a double Premier League champion, and a player who has lifted the FA Cup and Champions League with Manchester City, plus Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.

Barcelona step on the gas

Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday morning that Barcelona, after talks with Álvarez’s representatives, are now preparing their first official bid. Crucially, it will be a straight cash offer, with no players included.

“Barcelona are preparing first official bid for Julián Álvarez, to be sent soon — and without any players included,” Romano wrote on X, adding that Álvarez had already informed Atlético of his desire to leave after turning down a new contract.

The pressure did not stop there. Catalan outlets close to the club painted a picture of a full-court press from Barça’s sporting department.

Mundo Deportivo revealed that Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, held a meeting in a Barcelona hotel on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by agency colleague Andy Bara. Their report stressed that the pair believe their strong relationship with Atlético could help unlock a deal.

Sport went further. They reported that sporting director Deco met Hidalgo for “more than four hours” on Wednesday, hammering through the framework of a potential transfer. The plan, according to the same report, is clear: Barcelona intend to present an opening bid of around €90m (£78m, $104.5m) plus bonuses.

It is a long way from Atlético’s €150m valuation, and nobody close to the talks is pretending this will be simple. Sport’s sources warned that the negotiation will be neither quick nor easy, and certainly nothing like the recent Anthony Gordon transfer in terms of speed or structure.

A three‑way fight with no easy winner

Barcelona’s move does not scare off the others. It sharpens them.

PSG, still reshaping their attack and preparing to face Arsenal in the Champions League final, are described as “determined to make a strong push” for Álvarez. They can match almost any financial package and offer him a starring role in Paris.

Arsenal, for their part, are not walking away. Those close to the situation say both Arsenal and PSG have “received encouragement” that Álvarez is open to their projects, particularly if Barcelona fail to put together a package that satisfies Atlético.
