Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez is fast turning into the transfer saga of the summer, and the message coming out of Madrid could not be clearer: Atlético say it’s “impossible” he leaves. The rest of Europe is not so sure.

Argentinian reporter Gastón Edul has lifted the lid on the situation, insisting he is “confident” that “it’s very difficult or almost impossible for Julián to play for Atlético de Madrid next season.” One word stands out there: next. Not ever. Next.

The tension sits right in that gap.

Edul adds that PSG remain on the scene, still keen, still circling. Yet Álvarez, he says, has set his heart on Barcelona, even if the Camp Nou offer comes in below the financial packages others can put on the table. Less money, but a clearer dream.

Spain woke up on Monday to find Álvarez’s name splashed all over the front pages again. Mundo Deportivo report that Barcelona have now submitted a 100 million euro bid, a move that comes just days after Atlético reacted with fury to earlier claims of an offer and issued a strong denial that anything formal had arrived.

If that was an opening skirmish, the next one came quickly.

Journalist Verónica Brunati revealed on X that “FC Barcelona and Julián Álvarez’s agent had proposed a meeting for today. But Atlético de Madrid rejected it.” The response from the Metropolitano was blunt:

“The player is not for sale. He has an active contract and we are very happy with him.”

Inside the club, the message is that they are counting on Julián Álvarez for the 2026/27 season. Not just this year, not just the next. He is part of their medium‑term plan, not a bargaining chip.

Barcelona, though, know exactly where the line is drawn. Brunati notes that “Barça knows that Atlético is not willing to negotiate under the conditions they propose.” The Catalan club are pushing, but they are pushing against a locked door.

And they are not alone in waiting outside. Arsenal and PSG are described as “monitoring the situation,” watching for the slightest crack in Atlético’s stance, a hint that “impossible” might slowly edge towards “expensive, but negotiable.”

For now, the positions are entrenched.
