Barcelona believe the race is theirs to lose. Julián Álvarez is the prize, and the Catalan club are convinced the Argentine will be leading their line at Camp Nou next season.

On the day he prepares for a World Cup semi-final against Thomas Tuchel’s England, the 26-year-old forward sits at the centre of one of the summer’s defining transfer battles. Several of Europe’s heavyweights are circling, but inside Barcelona the feeling is clear: they are still in pole position.

Robert Lewandowski’s move to Chicago Fire has left a gaping hole at the heart of Hansi Flick’s attack. Barcelona’s response has been decisive. Álvarez is the first choice, the plan A, the striker earmarked to reshape their forward line.

Earlier in the summer, Barcelona lodged an offer of around £85m with Atlético Madrid. The bid drew no formal response from the Spanish capital. Silence from Atlético, but no panic in Catalonia.

The reason for that calm lies partly in Álvarez himself. During a recent trip to the United States, the forward publicly signalled his desire to leave Madrid and urged his club to negotiate a move. Inside Barcelona, that message was read as a clear push towards one destination: Camp Nou.

Arsenal and PSG wait in the shadows

The interest, though, stretches well beyond La Liga.

Premier League champions Arsenal are tracking the situation closely. In Argentina, Clarin report that Mikel Arteta’s staff are “following every movement”, ready to move if Barcelona fail to get a deal over the line.

Paris Saint-Germain, the current Champions League holders, are also in the frame. Both clubs have the financial muscle to complicate any negotiation. Neither has done so yet.

Barcelona know that no rival has gone beyond their initial £85m proposal. The understanding is that Arsenal’s offer sits below that figure, while PSG would only be prepared to reach it by adding players into a potential package rather than matching the fee outright.

For now, that matters. It strengthens Barcelona’s belief that, if the player holds his line, they remain ahead.

Barça prepare their next move

Inside the club, the strategy is already shifting to a second phase. Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona are putting together a new, improved offer to present to Atlético at the end of July.

The fixed fee is expected to stay close to the original £85m, but this time the Catalans plan to load the proposal with performance-related variables to sweeten the deal. There is also an acceptance that a player may have to move in the opposite direction if Atlético continue to dig in.

President Joan Laporta is set to front the negotiations, with sporting directors fully aware that Arsenal and PSG have yet to surpass Barcelona’s terms. The leverage is not absolute, but it exists, and Barcelona intend to use it.

World Cup first, decisions later

For Álvarez, everything else is on hold.

Those close to the Argentina camp insist his focus is entirely on the World Cup. He does not intend to make any definitive call on his club future until the tournament is over. No ultimatums, no rushed choices. Just the national team, and the chance to reach a final.

That stance threatens to stretch the saga deep into August. Barcelona accept that possibility but also know they cannot wait forever.

Flick’s side start their La Liga campaign on 23 August, and the German coach has been clear: any new first-team signing must be integrated before the season kicks off. The revamped offer to Atlético will not sit on the table indefinitely.

If Atlético refuse to engage, Barcelona will move on.

Plan B in the background

Behind the scenes, the recruitment department is already working on alternatives. Sources have told Spanish outlet AS that the hierarchy is advancing on another forward, a player described only as one of the leading strikers on the international stage.

The name remains under wraps, but the message is deliberate. Barcelona will not allow themselves to be held hostage by a single negotiation, no matter how highly they rate Álvarez.

Even so, inside the club the conviction endures: the Argentine wants Barcelona, and Barcelona want him.

The numbers, the timing, the pressure from rival giants — all of it will test that resolve in the coming weeks. If Camp Nou is to be Álvarez’s next home, someone will have to blink.
