Barcelona escalate Julian Alvarez transfer pursuit as Laporta intervenes

FC Barcelona have turned a long-running flirtation into an outright transfer siege. Julian Alvarez remains the chosen No. 9 for Hansi Flick, and the Catalan club are now prepared to push their offer well beyond the original €100 million proposal rejected by Atletico Madrid.

The message from Barcelona is clear: Alvarez is the priority, and they are not walking away yet.

Offer on the table – but not for long

Barcelona’s initial bid, worth around €100 million including add-ons and structured over six instalments, has already been dismissed by Atletico. That proposal officially remains on the table, but only until the end of the month. It is a deadline designed to force movement, or at least a reaction.

The reigning La Liga champions are ready to go higher. According to Santi Ovalle of Cadena SER, Barça are willing to improve the package to roughly €130 million, most of that increase likely tied to performance-related bonuses, while keeping the fixed fee unchanged. It is an attempt to unlock a negotiation that, so far, Atletico have refused to even entertain.

Barcelona know they are pushing the limits of their finances and their planning. They also believe that the Argentine forward is worth stretching for.

Laporta takes the wheel

The transfer has now moved out of the sporting department and into the presidential office.

Joan Laporta has personally taken charge of talks with Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin. The shift comes after Deco’s formal proposal, sent through the usual sporting-director channels, received no response from Atletico counterpart Mateu Alemany.

The relationship between the two sporting directors is described as non-existent. Deco’s offer, according to reports, never even made it to the top decision-makers at the Metropolitano. It was simply set aside.

So Laporta has stepped in. This is now an executive-level battle, president to CEO, with Barcelona hoping that direct contact can open a door that has stayed firmly shut all summer.

Atletico dig in

On the other side of the table, Atletico’s stance has not moved an inch.

Club sources continue to insist they will not negotiate Alvarez’s sale to Barcelona. The Rojiblancos have held that line throughout the window, even after the player publicly stated his desire to leave. There has been no softening in tone, no hint of compromise.

Diego Simeone’s staff have already drawn a line in the calendar. Alvarez has been instructed to report for pre-season training on August 10, treated as a key part of the squad until something changes on Atletico’s terms, not anyone else’s.

Barcelona are banking on the opposite. They are waiting – and hoping – for another public gesture from Alvarez, something that might crank up the pressure on Atletico’s hierarchy and shift the political weight of the deal.

Few alternatives for Flick

Behind the scenes, Barça are scanning the market, but with little enthusiasm. The club believe there are very few forwards who match the specific profile Hansi Flick wants to build his attack around. Alvarez, in their eyes, is the fit: work rate, movement, finishing, age, and room to grow.

That is why the offer is being pushed higher, why Laporta is now directly involved, and why the club are prepared to wait for a breakthrough rather than pivot quickly to a Plan B.

Atletico, though, are not blinking. Barcelona have raised the stakes, tightened the timeline, and brought their president into the room. The next move may not come from an office at all, but from Alvarez himself – and that could decide whether this becomes the transfer of Barcelona’s summer, or the one that got away.
