Barcelona Considering Dumfries as Kounde's Future Uncertain

The season is barely over, yet Barcelona are already deep in the mechanics of a summer that could reshape their back line as much as their attack.

A new centre-forward tops the agenda, but inside the sporting department there is a clear secondary theme: the right side of defence is no longer untouchable. Jules Kounde’s performances – and his long-term fit at full-back – have opened the door to a rethink. That door now has a familiar name attached to it.

Dumfries back in the frame

Denzel Dumfries has re-emerged on Barça’s radar. According to FC Inter News, relayed by SPORT, the Inter Milan right-back is again being considered as a serious option for the Catalan club.

Inter are prepared for the possibility of a permanent exit this summer. Dumfries’ camp is already sounding out Europe’s elite, and the player is listening. Liverpool and Barcelona, two clubs that tracked him in previous windows, have been brought back into the conversation.

The Dutch international recently changed agents. His new representative, Ali Barat, met Deco a few days ago to lay out the defender’s situation and gauge Barça’s intentions. The response was cautious rather than cold.

Barcelona like the player. They are simply not in a position to move first.

For now, the club will wait. Any approach for Dumfries hinges on what happens with Kounde and with other potential departures in defence. Inside the club, there is a clear sense that the Frenchman’s case could trigger major movement once the market opens up properly.

Kounde as the domino piece

Kounde is no longer ring-fenced. Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for the 25-year-old and are prepared for a summer in which several scenarios are on the table: a big sale, a positional reshuffle, or a recommitment to him as a central defender rather than a full-back.

Dumfries already understands the equation. Any move to Camp Nou would depend heavily on a significant outgoing transfer, with Kounde at the centre of that equation. Without that kind of sale, the deal is unlikely to get off the ground.

The club’s hierarchy is under no illusions. They know Kounde’s situation could become one of the defining stories of their summer window, shaping not only who arrives, but how Hansi Flick’s defensive structure looks in his first season in charge.

A €25 million window of opportunity

There is, however, a very clear hook in Dumfries’ case: his contract includes a €25 million release clause that activates in July. It is not open-ended. The clause runs for only one month.

That tight window changes the rhythm of negotiations. Any club serious about signing him will have to move decisively during that period or prepare for a more complex, potentially more expensive, negotiation with Inter once the clause expires.

Twelve months ago, the story could have been very different. Jorge Mendes, who then represented Dumfries, pushed aggressively to take him to Barcelona. The operation stalled against a familiar wall: Barça’s salary restrictions. The club simply could not fit the deal into their wage structure.

This time, the numbers look more manageable. Dumfries’ salary demands are considered acceptable within Barcelona’s current framework. The obstacle is no longer his wage, but the club’s broader strategy of exits and priorities.

Cancelo first, then the rest

Right now, the immediate focus on that flank is João Cancelo. Barcelona are working to reach an agreement with Al Hilal to keep the Portuguese full-back, whose versatility on both sides of the defence is highly valued by the technical staff.

Only once Cancelo’s future is clarified will the club fully address the rest of the defensive puzzle. Outgoings will dictate incomings. That is the reality of Barça’s financial landscape.

Inside the sporting department, Dumfries remains a name with strong backing. Deco and Flick both see him as a profile the squad currently lacks: a physically dominant, explosive wide defender who can drive the team up the pitch and add aggression on the flank.

For Dumfries to move from “liked” to “realistic”, though, Barcelona would need to execute an ambitious plan of sales. That likely means a major fee for Kounde or another high-value defender, and clarity on Cancelo’s situation.

The release clause is there. The agents are ready. The club admires the player.

Now the question is simple: will Barcelona create the space – and find the courage – to pull the trigger when July’s brief window opens?
