Barcelona Cancels World Cup Tribute Amid Political Tensions

Barcelona's president, Joan Laporta, has confirmed that the club will no longer hold the tribute honoring their eight Spanish players who won the World Cup last month. The decision comes after violent clashes erupted between fans and police, stirring political tensions in Catalonia.

Tensions Escalate at Camp Nou

The club had intended to celebrate the World Cup champions before their La Liga match against Athletic Club on Thursday at Camp Nou. Other Spanish teams have already recognized their international stars during recent home games, but Barcelona abruptly canceled their event following unrest related to incidents at their previous match.

During Sunday's 5-0 win over Elche, traveling supporters reported police brutality and confiscation of pro-independence Estelada flags. This heavy-handed approach prompted the club's leadership to rethink the planned celebration.

Laporta Explains the Decision

"The ceremony to honor the world champions will not take place," Laporta said. "It is not happening because the current context isn’t suitable. The Royal Spanish Football Federation understands this decision."

He also defended fans' right to display the Estelada flag, emphasizing it as a symbol of freedom of expression and part of many supporters' identity.

"Football should unite people, not fuel confrontations," Laporta added.

Condemnation of Police Actions

The treatment of fans carrying regional symbols remains a sensitive subject in Spain. Laporta did not hesitate to criticize the authorities for their actions during the weekend.

"We condemn and reject the disproportionate force used by national police officers against Barca fans who carried the Estelada before the Elche game," he stated. "We demand appropriate sanctions once the facts are established."

He expressed hope that future measures would allow fans to show their flags without fear of violence or stigmatization.

Focus Shifts Back to the Pitch

Despite the off-field controversy, Barcelona now turns to their La Liga fixture against Athletic Club without the planned pre-match tribute. The team aims to continue the momentum from their commanding victory over Elche amid ongoing political challenges.
