Aurelien Tchouameni: Mourinho's Madrid Reboot Sparks Liverpool and United Interest

The message to Aurelien Tchouameni has been blunt enough: his long-term place at Real Madrid is no longer guaranteed. For a player once ring-fenced as part of the club’s future spine, that is a seismic shift – and it has sent a jolt through recruitment departments at Liverpool and Manchester United.

Both clubs have tracked the France international for years. Both have stayed in touch with his camp throughout the summer. Now, with Madrid’s midfield being ripped up and rebuilt under Jose Mourinho, they sense an opening that simply did not exist a few months ago.

Mourinho’s rebuild claims its first big-name casualty

Tchouameni’s position in the Spanish capital had already looked a little fragile after his well-publicised training-ground clash with Federico Valverde earlier this year. At the time, Madrid moved quickly to close ranks, insisting the former Monaco midfielder remained central to their plans and brushing off any talk of a sale.

That stance has shifted with Mourinho’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portuguese coach has wasted no time reshaping the squad. The back line has been reinforced with Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City to inject guile and goals into midfield. And the shopping list is far from complete.

Inside Madrid, Enzo Fernandez remains a priority target from Chelsea. Rodri is still admired at the highest levels of the club. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being watched closely. There is also the prospect of a renewed push for Bayern Munich star Michael Olise, with the club prepared to commit serious money to land another marquee name.

That kind of ambition comes with a cost. Someone has to make way.

Madrid now see Tchouameni as one of the few players capable of generating a major fee without tearing the dressing room apart. With two years left on his contract, the club are ready to listen at around €100m (£87m, $115m) – a figure they believe reflects his standing without scaring off every serious bidder.

Liverpool and United sense a rare chance

That change in tone from Madrid has not gone unnoticed in England. Liverpool and Manchester United have both been fully briefed on the situation and are poised to move if the green light arrives from Spain.

Liverpool’s interest runs deep. They pushed hard to sign Tchouameni from Monaco in 2022 before losing out to Madrid, and their admiration has not dimmed. With questions hanging over the long-term futures of several midfielders and the club widening its scope beyond domestic options such as Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, Tchouameni is viewed as the kind of instant upgrade who can lift the entire unit in one stroke.

At Old Trafford, the view is just as clear. United’s hierarchy have monitored him for several seasons and rate him among the elite midfielders in world football. Internally, he is seen as a player who could transform both the balance and the technical level of their midfield, rather than simply adding depth.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also keeping a watching brief, but the current landscape points towards Liverpool and United as the best placed to act if Madrid formally invite offers.

High price, but a different conversation

Madrid know the market. Push too high and they risk killing the deal before it starts, especially at a time when top clubs are increasingly wary of inflated fees and the financial regulations that come with them.

United have already walked away from moves for Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson after valuations soared beyond what they considered sensible. Liverpool, too, have shown little appetite for paying over the odds for domestic targets.

Tchouameni, though, occupies a different category in the minds of recruitment teams. His pedigree with France, his Champions League exposure, his profile as a modern holding midfielder who can dominate physically and play through pressure – all of that makes a nine-figure investment easier to justify than many of the numbers currently circulating elsewhere.

Inside Madrid, there is an acceptance that significant sales are needed to keep funding Mourinho’s overhaul. Tchouameni sits near the top of that list of saleable assets: valuable enough to bring in a huge fee, expendable enough in a crowded midfield, and now no longer guaranteed the central role he once enjoyed.

He has been told as much. Alongside compatriot Eduardo Camavinga, he has been warned that further midfield arrivals could push him down the pecking order. For a player in his prime at 26, that is a stark reality.

The pressure is building on every side. Mourinho wants his new-look engine room. Madrid want funds. Liverpool and United want a statement midfielder who can anchor their next cycle.

If someone blinks, Tchouameni could become the defining transfer of this window – and a symbol of how ruthless Mourinho’s Madrid is prepared to be.
