Atletico Madrid Declares Julián Álvarez Unavailable as Barcelona Talks Fade

The message from Madrid could not have been clearer. Julián Álvarez is going nowhere.

After days of noise from Barcelona about an offer on the table and a ticking clock, Atletico de Madrid president Enrique Cerezo stepped forward to shut the door – and bolt it.

Barcelona chief Joan Laporta had publicly stressed that Barça would not be held hostage in the chase for the Argentine forward. He framed the Catalan club as the one setting the tempo.

“We’re not going to dance to anyone’s tune. We set the pace here,” Laporta said, outlining that a proposal had been made to sign the player requested by the coach and technical staff. The offer, he underlined, was not a blank cheque or a never-ending invitation. “We’ve made an offer, but it’s not an open-ended offer, it’s not an unlimited offer.”

Laporta leaned into the admiration from Barcelona’s side. They “like him a lot,” he said, and he called Álvarez “a fantastic player.” He also tried to cool any suggestion of tension between the clubs, pointing instead to a misunderstanding over the structure of the bid.

“There was some confusion regarding the offer we made, and I clarified it,” he explained. From Barça’s perspective, the stance is simple: once Atletico have an alternative in place, the offer stands. Until then, Barcelona would wait without applying extra pressure. “That’s where it ended. It hasn’t progressed any further, for the time being.”

The calm tone in Catalonia met a very different kind of clarity in the capital.

Confronted with Laporta’s implicit ultimatum, Cerezo responded with a pointed reminder of who actually controls the player’s future. Álvarez remains tied to Atletico de Madrid until June 2030, and Cerezo was in no mood to entertain the idea of that changing this summer.

“Joan Laporta is a good friend, he’s a great president,” Cerezo began, offering the usual courtesies. Then came the punchline. “He knows very well, as do all of you, where Julián Álvarez will be playing next year.”

No room for ambiguity. No hint of negotiation. Just a firm statement that the forward’s immediate future lies at the Metropolitano.

The saga has been fuelled by the player’s recent actions, which sparked talk of a possible exit and opened the door to Barcelona’s interest. Asked whether Atletico’s hierarchy would be prepared to forgive Álvarez for those missteps, Cerezo struck a more conciliatory tone without softening his position.

“In this life, we all make mistakes, everything can be forgiven,” he said, before circling straight back to the central point. “I insist that he is a player of Atletico de Madrid.”

Barcelona may feel they have made their move and set their deadline. Atletico’s answer, delivered with a smile but underlined in thick red ink, is that the clock isn’t ticking in Catalonia – it’s firmly in Madrid’s hands.
