Atlético Madrid Nears Cristian Romero Signing for Defensive Rebuild

Diego Simeone has asked for a leader at the back. Atlético Madrid are now on the verge of giving him Cristian Romero.

Talks with Tottenham Hotspur for the Argentine centre-back have moved into their final stretch, with negotiations accelerating in the last few hours after weeks of resistance from the Premier League club. The deal is not done yet, but inside the Metropolitano there is growing conviction: Romero should arrive for under 40 million euros.

This is not a signing driven by opportunity. It is driven by the coach. Journalist Pedro Fullana revealed on “El Larguero” that Simeone personally pushed for Romero, seeing in his compatriot the edge and authority his defence lacked last season. Atlético bled goals, lost duels they once devoured, and too often looked nothing like the snarling back line that defined Simeone’s best years.

So he went back to type. An aggressive, front-foot defender, used to high pressure and high stakes. Romero fits the profile.

To make it happen, Atlético must sell – and they know exactly where the money is coming from. The club expects around 20 million euros from Nahuel Molina, another 20 million from Matteo Ruggeri, and roughly 10 million from Thiago Almada’s move to River Plate. Those outgoing deals, once finalised, will effectively underwrite the Romero operation.

Tottenham, for their part, have not rushed. They dragged negotiations out in recent weeks, aware of Romero’s importance and of Atlético’s need. The stance has softened lately. Progress has come quickly, and both sides are now working to close the gap and formalise the agreement.

On the player’s side, there is no hesitation. Romero wants Madrid. He wants Atlético. He wants Simeone.

The defender has made his preference clear by turning down every other offer on the table, holding his position while the two clubs haggle over the final numbers. His intention is to wear the red and white shirt next season, anchoring a defence built in his manager’s image.

If Atlético complete the move as planned, Simeone will finally have the piece he has been demanding. The question now is simple: with Romero at the heart of it, can Atlético’s defence once again become the standard by which the rest of LaLiga is judged?
