According to Sky in Germany, the total package for Manzambi comes in at close to £59.5m (€70m) including add-ons, eclipsing the £50m Villa paid Everton for Amadou Onana in the summer of 2024. It is a statement fee, the kind that announces not just ambition, but expectation.

From Freiburg’s engine room to record signing

Manzambi arrives in Birmingham off the back of a relentless season in Germany. Primarily a central midfielder, he drove Freiburg’s campaign with seven goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

His performances in Europe were particularly eye-catching. Manzambi was named Europa League Young Player of the Season after helping Freiburg all the way to the final, where, in a twist that now feels rich with narrative, Aston Villa beat them 3-0 in Istanbul.

If Europe put Manzambi on the radar, the World Cup shoved him onto the global stage.

In a tournament dominated by established superstars, the Swiss midfielder became the rare breakout act who refused to play by the usual rules. He finished with more goals than starts for his country, an astonishing impact for a player with just one full season as a club starter behind him.

The moment that changed everything came against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Sent on in the 71st minute, he tore the game apart, scoring twice and walking away with the man-of-the-match award. That was no cameo. That was an announcement.

He followed it up by scoring and assisting against Canada, a performance that underlined his blend of timing, composure and drive. Then came the cruel twist: a minor injury ruled him out of Switzerland’s quarter-final defeat to Argentina.

The questions have not stopped since. Could he have tipped that tie against ageing opposition in extra-time? Might Switzerland have avoided extra-time altogether with Manzambi on the pitch? Former international Bruno Berner summed up the mood back home when he told Sky Sports: “We missed him massively. He would have given us something different.”

Villa are betting heavily that “something different” will now power their midfield.

For Newcastle, this stings. They identified Manzambi early, did the groundwork, and had him verbally on board. Then Villa’s Champions League pull and record-breaking bid ripped the deal away in the final stretch.
