Aston Villa Faces Arsenal Interest as Liverpool and Newcastle Seek Defensive Upgrades

Aston Villa’s uneasy summer shows no sign of calming. Now it is Ezri Konsa back under the spotlight, and Arsenal are circling again.

A £14m move for Atlético Madrid’s Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri is being worked on, a deal that would add fresh legs and balance on the flank if it gets over the line. Liverpool scan Europe’s back line

Up on Merseyside, Liverpool are trawling the market for defensive reinforcements of their own.

Real Madrid centre-back Raúl Asencio has been told he can leave the Bernabéu, and intermediaries have opened the door to Anfield, according to Teamtalk. At 23, he fits the profile Liverpool like: young, available, and with the pedigree of Madrid on his CV. Whether he becomes a cornerstone or a squad option will depend on how hard Liverpool push.

Newcastle and Fulham chase midfield steel

Back in England, Newcastle United are trying to move from damage control to recruitment drive.

After another summer of big-name exits, they need arrivals to steady the mood. Football Insider reports that a bid for Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall is being lined up. The Swede is also on Nottingham Forest’s radar, which adds a little edge to the chase. Newcastle need more legs and invention in midfield; Bergvall could help answer that question if they beat Forest to his signature.

Down in west London, Fulham are tracking Southampton’s Shea Charles. The Northern Ireland midfielder is valued at £30m by Saints, a figure that reflects both his age and his importance. Boro are not stopping there. A £7m move for Spurs centre-half Ashley Phillips is also close. Two young defenders, both with top-flight pedigrees in their background, both arriving at a club with promotion ambitions. For Middlesbrough, this is not just squad padding. It is a statement that they plan to be ready when the race for the Premier League tightens and the margins start to bite.
