Assim Madibo Receives Five-Match Suspension for Serious Foul Play

Assim Madibo has been handed a five‑match suspension for the tackle that left Canada midfielder Ismael Kone with a broken leg at the FIFA World Cup, a stark punishment that underlines how severely the challenge has been judged.

The incident came in a match Canada went on to dominate. Madibo saw red in the 54th minute, dismissed for the lunge that ended Kone’s tournament and left Qatar a man down. Canada did not ease off. They ran out 6-0 winners, a statement scoreline on a night overshadowed by the injury.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee classified the incident as “serious foul play,” triggering the lengthy ban. The ruling sidelines the 29-year-old midfielder for five competitive fixtures, a significant spell for a player who has become a mainstay for his country. Madibo, capped 53 times by Qatar, retains the right to challenge the decision through the FIFA Appeal Committee.

Away from the legal language and disciplinary procedures, there was a human response. In the days after Kone underwent surgery, Madibo visited him in hospital. The Qatar Football Federation framed the gesture as a reminder of football’s better side.

“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field,” the federation said in a statement, adding its wishes for Kone’s “speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch.”

For Qatar, the timing is brutal. A native of Khartoum and a key figure in the national setup, Madibo will be absent as his teammates try to salvage their World Cup campaign. They close out the group stage on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina, knowing a win would still be enough to reach the knockout rounds.

They must now chase that result without one of their most experienced midfielders, while the tackle that removed him from the tournament continues to echo far beyond the 54th minute in which it was made.
