Mikel Arteta Hails Mikel Merino as One of the Smartest Players After Arsenal's Carabao Cup Win

Mikel Arteta offered high praise for Mikel Merino following Arsenal’s 4-2 triumph against Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup. The Spanish midfielder, who captained the side and scored at Portman Road, earned special recognition despite being more of a rotational player in the Premier League.

Arsenal Advance to Fourth Round

The Gunners continued their strong start to the season with a confident win on Tuesday. Teenage talent Max Dowman stole some spotlight by scoring twice, but Arteta was keen to emphasize the impact of his experienced squad members.

"He’s unbelievable," Arteta said. "First of all, he’s one of the most intelligent players I’ve seen and worked with. His personality is full of... I don’t know, he just wants to give for everybody. He thinks about everything, he thinks about everybody."

The manager also praised Merino’s tactical flexibility. He explained, "He has qualities that are unique in football and in our team. His ability to arrive in the box, play different positions, link play with others. As a midfielder, his knack for scoring goals like tonight is something we haven’t seen recently, but it’s incredible."

Merino Proud to Captain Arsenal

Since joining from Real Sociedad for £31.6 million in August 2024, Merino has scored 16 goals in 84 appearances across all competitions. Yet, this season he remains on the fringes in the Premier League, making just four substitute appearances so far.

"It’s a huge honour," Merino shared. "I’m so proud to represent this club wearing the armband. Many legends have done it before me. It brings happiness, and I try to do my best to represent this club. I understand how big it is to wear the armband, so I’m really happy."

Looking Ahead: Brighton and the Carabao Cup Draw

Following Arsenal’s progress, the team will find out their next Carabao Cup opponent on Wednesday after Manchester United plays Brighton. With several Premier League teams already knocked out, including Tottenham and Leeds, Arsenal remain well placed to compete for the trophy.

Now, Arteta’s squad must focus back on the Premier League with a challenging trip to Brighton scheduled for Saturday. Securing a good result there will be key to keeping their momentum before the international break.
