Despite the chance to bring in the highly rated Lyon youngster, Arteta stopped the deal in the final hours of the window.

Still, Arteta doubted whether Fofana could handle the intense physicality and pace of the Premier League. While Arsenal stepped back, Sunderland and Crystal Palace engaged in a fierce battle to sign Fofana. Sunderland eventually prevailed, beating out the Eagles despite their last-minute effort to hijack the deal. Manager Regis Le Bris’s side secured Fofana on a five-year contract by offering a higher commission to his representatives.

Sunderland’s leadership expressed pride in landing a player once linked with Liverpool and Chelsea. This signing marks a big win for the club, bringing in a top talent regarded as one of Ligue 1’s brightest prospects.
