Arsenal’s World Cup Players Impact Mikel Arteta’s Pre-Season Plans

Arsenal’s World Cup success comes at a cost for Mikel Arteta. Ten of his players are now guaranteed to miss the start of pre-season, their international progress colliding head‑on with the club’s summer plans.

The World Cup last-16 has been kind to Arsenal’s squad. Brutal, too.

Ten through, ten missing

Only Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes have tasted knockout disappointment so far, exiting with Brazil in the last-16. Everyone else has marched on.

William Saliba is into the quarter-finals with France after a tight 1-0 win over Paraguay. Brazil’s exit cleared the way for Martin Odegaard and Norway to progress as well, a twist that keeps Arsenal’s captain away from London a little longer.

England’s contingent have pushed on as well. Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice and Noni Madueke all reached the last eight after a breathless 3-2 victory over Mexico, with Rice and Saka heavily involved in the opener that set the tone.

Spain needed a moment of composure. Mikel Merino provided it, scoring the decisive goal in their win over Portugal and dragging David Raya and Martin Zubimendi into the quarter-finals with him. Leandro Trossard added his own touch of class, registering an assist as Belgium dismantled the United States.

Stack it all up and the picture is clear: ten Arsenal players in the World Cup quarter-finals, and all ten expected to miss the opening phase of pre-season.

Timelines that squeeze Arteta

France are first back in action, with their quarter-final on July 9th. Even if Saliba’s tournament ends there, he will not return to club duty before July 31st at the earliest – the day before Arsenal’s first friendly. The club’s policy of at least three weeks’ rest kicks in, and in Saliba’s case, his recent injury concerns suggest he may need a little longer to be eased back.

Pre-season itself will begin earlier than July 31st, giving those available a chance to get several sessions under their belt before that opening fixture. Arteta will have to build his initial plans without a core chunk of his international stars.

The other nine Arsenal players involved in the last eight will play their quarter-finals on July 10th and 11th. That shaves their turnaround time even tighter before the friendlies begin, and any deep run from their nations will push their return dates further into August.

And the schedule only thickens from here. Anyone who wins in the quarter-finals will be locked into a semi-final and then either a third-place play-off or the final itself. There is no early exit route once you’re in the last four.

Spain face Belgium, pitting Merino, Raya and Zubimendi against Trossard. Norway meet England, which means Odegaard up against Saka, Rice, Eze and Madueke. At least two Arsenal players are guaranteed to be involved right up to the final weekend of the tournament. That number rises if France, Spain or England go all the way.

Arteta’s early summer will be built on what he has, not what he’s missing.

The skeleton of Arsenal’s early pre-season squad

For those not called up, or already knocked out, the picture is far more straightforward. Barring any late changes, they should be available for the entirety of pre-season, giving Arteta a solid base group to work with.

The senior core expected from day one looks like this:

  • Goalkeepers
    Kepa Arrizabalaga, Tommy Setford
  • Defenders
Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White, Piero Hincapie, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori
  • Midfielders
Myles Lewis-Skelly, Christian Norgaard, Fabio Vieira, Ethan Nwaneri
  • Forwards
Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres, Reiss Nelson, Kai Havertz

Youth prospects such as Max Dowman and Marli Salmon are also set to be involved, even if they do not feature on the senior list.

It leaves Arteta with an intriguing blend: established first-teamers, returning talents like Timber, new faces bedding in, and a clutch of youngsters desperate to impress while the World Cup contingent rests. For some, this won’t just be pre-season fitness work – it will be an audition they may never get again.
