With pre-season already underway and the Premier League title to defend, Arteta’s attention has shifted to a different kind of forward. According to reports, Arsenal have been tracking Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito, a player who has also caught the eye of Manchester United.

Scouts from the Emirates were in attendance for Inter’s pre-season derby against AC Milan, sent specifically to watch the 21-year-old. At 6ft 3in, Esposito offers a more traditional focal point, and his recent form has clearly registered with Arteta as he looks to deepen a striking department currently led by Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz.

United are understood to admire Esposito as well, but are not expected to rush into a bid. Arsenal, by contrast, are actively exploring options as they look to sharpen an attack that will again be asked to carry a title challenge.

Inter have tried to slam the brakes on any chase. Publicly, the Serie A club have branded Esposito “untouchable”, a clear message to circling European heavyweights. Privately, though, a different reality lurks: a price tag of around £73 million has been set, should serious offers arrive.

Those close to the player insist he remains committed to Inter. Yet the pull of the Premier League is said to be strong, and Esposito is understood to be open to a move to England if the right proposal lands. For Arsenal, that combination of youth, profile and availability is exactly the kind of opportunity they have built this era on.

Villa brace for Konsa exit as Arsenal circle

Arteta’s rebuild is not confined to the front line. At the back, Arsenal’s interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has hardened, with reports suggesting Villa are increasingly resigned to losing one of their key players.

The move has its roots in Arsenal’s injury issues. Arteta first ramped up his admiration for Konsa after William Saliba suffered a back injury at the World Cup. The problem has lingered into a period where Ben White and Jurrien Timber are also dealing with fitness concerns, leaving Arsenal light in central defence.

Konsa, 28, has emerged as a primary target, but Arsenal’s opening offer is believed to have fallen well short of Villa’s valuation, coming in at just over half of the Midlands club’s £60m asking price. Even so, the mood at Villa Park is shifting. According to reports, senior figures at Villa are “increasingly concerned” that Konsa could depart before the window closes.

Inside the dressing room, that anxiety is shared. Team-mates are said to fear he is preparing for an exit, with Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans already gone this summer. The sense of a core being chipped away is growing.

Arsenal are not alone in monitoring the situation. Liverpool, wrestling with defensive problems of their own, are also watching Konsa. Virgil van Dijk is back in the squad following his World Cup exertions, but a pre-season injury to Joe Gomez and the absence of Jeremy Jacquet in other friendlies have left Andoni Iraola short of options.

So the stage is set. Arsenal, champions of England and operating with intent, are pushing on two fronts: a powerful young striker in Esposito and a proven Premier League defender in Konsa. The question now is not whether they will act, but which club blinks first in a market that is starting to tighten.
