Arsenal Targets Ezri Konsa Amid Injury Crisis

Arsenal’s move for Ezri Konsa has already hit a nerve at Aston Villa.

The Premier League champions, suddenly scrambling for a new centre-back after William Saliba’s injury, lodged what has been described as a low-ball opening offer for the England defender. At Villa Park, the reaction was blunt: anger, and a firm reminder of Konsa’s value.

Arsenal change course – and zero in on Konsa

Arsenal had not gone into the summer expecting to buy another central defender. The plan was to build around Saliba, with Jurrien Timber and Ben White offering flexibility across the back line.

That plan has been ripped up.

Saliba faces a prolonged spell out, Timber and White are managing injuries of their own, and the club have pivoted into the centre-back market. Maxence Lacroix was on the radar before he chose Chelsea. The focus has now settled on Konsa, one of Unai Emery’s most reliable pillars at Aston Villa and a player who enhanced his reputation with England at the World Cup.

His appeal is obvious. Konsa is versatile across the back line, comfortable in a high defensive line, and battle-tested in both domestic and European football. He is also tied to Villa until 2028, which hands the Midlands club enormous leverage.

Villa dig in over £60m valuation

Arsenal tested that leverage with an opening bid earlier in the summer. It fell flat.

Villa, who have already sold Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans in this window, would rather not see another core piece walk out of the door. The hierarchy have set their stance: Konsa will only leave for around £60m.

According to the latest report, Arsenal’s first proposal came in at a little more than half of that figure. For Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris, it landed badly. The offer was seen as an insult to both the player’s importance and the club’s negotiating position.

The champions, then, know exactly where the bar sits if they are serious. They will have to come back with something far more substantial.

A dressing room braced for change

Inside the Villa dressing room, there is a different mood. Publicly, the club stand firm. Privately, the squad are said to be increasingly resigned to Konsa’s departure.

They have seen this pattern before. A key player attracts a heavyweight, the numbers start to climb, and resolve is slowly eroded. Konsa’s consistency under Emery and his performances on the international stage have made this moment feel inevitable to some within the camp.

Villa’s position is clear: they can demand a premium. Arsenal’s need only strengthens that hand.

Arsenal’s wider rebuild – and the pressure to deliver

All of this unfolds against a busy backdrop in north London.

Bruno Guimaraes is set to become Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer, arriving for £75m after deals for Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis. The club are still hunting a winger as well, having missed out on Vinicius Junior and Bradley Barcola.

Konsa, though, has become central to the defensive rebuild. With Saliba sidelined and doubts around the immediate availability of Timber and White, Arsenal cannot afford to get this one wrong. They need a starter, not a squad filler.

The pressure finally told in their pursuit strategy: after losing Lacroix to Chelsea and seeing top attacking targets slip away, Arsenal have little room left for missteps in negotiations.

Villa know it. Arsenal know it. The opening offer might have infuriated Sawiris, but it also laid down the first marker in a transfer that now feels like a test of will as much as wealth.

If the champions truly want Ezri Konsa, the next bid will show just how badly.
