Arsenal’s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes has moved from background noise to a full-blown saga, with the midfielder understood to have made it clear he wants the move – and Newcastle United just as clear they will not be bullied into selling.

Arsenal have spent much of the summer plotting how to add another high-class midfielder to a title-winning squad. Guimaraes has been at the top of that list. Long admired for his blend of bite, control and personality, the 28-year-old is seen at the Emirates as a player who can walk straight into a side preparing to defend their Premier League crown.

They now know roughly what it will cost.

After an initial offer – reported elsewhere to have been in the region of £55m and rejected – Arsenal have been working on a new proposal. The Daily Mail report that a bid of around £75m could finally move the conversation forward, with fresh talks expected after Newcastle knocked back the first approach.

Newcastle’s stance is simple: Guimaraes is under contract until 2028 and they will not lose a cornerstone of their side on the cheap. They have already watched Anthony Gordon depart for Barcelona in a £69m deal and sanctioned Sandro Tonali’s £100m move, including add-ons, to Tottenham Hotspur this week. A third key exit in the same window would cut deep.

So if Arsenal want him, they will have to pay full price.

Player’s desire adds fuel

The dynamic shifted on Wednesday. Reports emerged that Guimaraes had informed Newcastle of his desire to leave and specifically to join Arsenal. For a club trying to hold its line, that is the kind of development that can turn a firm stance into a negotiation.

Inside St James’ Park, there is said to be “astonishment” that Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, has not yet formally opened talks with Newcastle despite the growing noise around the deal. Interest has been obvious for weeks; the direct phone call, less so.

That is expected to change. A formal approach now feels inevitable.

Guimaraes has just returned from international duty with Brazil at the World Cup in North America, where he helped his country reach the last 16 before a surprise exit to Norway. His stock at club and international level remains high, and he knows this is a prime moment in his career to secure a move to a side competing at the very top of the Premier League.

Arsenal’s midfield gamble

Arsenal’s need is clear. A title defence demands depth as much as quality. The club have been tipped to reinforce both midfield and the forward line, but the chase for Guimaraes carries a particular weight. This is not a squad-filler. This is a statement signing.

Reports suggest Arsenal have been prepared to climb from £55m towards £60m. Newcastle’s response has effectively been to raise the bar again. Around £75m is now being floated as the figure that could unlock serious progress.

It is a steep climb from where Arsenal started, but the market has already been set this summer. Gordon at £69m. Tonali at £100m with add-ons. Newcastle know exactly what an elite asset costs in 2026, and they will benchmark Guimaraes accordingly.

Newcastle’s breaking point

The question now sits with Newcastle’s hierarchy. Two major departures have already reshaped the dressing room and the wage bill. Guimaraes is not just another name on the team sheet; he is one of the players around whom the side has been built.

Lose him, and this becomes a very different project.
