Arsenal's New Winger Christos Tzolis: A Ready-Made Weapon

Arsenal’s new Greek winger Christos Tzolis has barely walked through the door and already looks like the sharpest forward in the building.

Signed to replace Leandro Trossard, who left for Besiktas last week, Tzolis arrives not as a long-term project but as a ready-made weapon for the left flank, with the versatility to operate anywhere across the front line. Arsenal were drawn to him for one simple reason: end product. Twenty-two goals and 29 assists in Belgium last season is the kind of output that forces elite clubs to take notice.

A head start on the squad

While much of Arsenal’s squad are still shaking off the World Cup or only just returning to full training, Tzolis is already deep into his summer workload.

Greece did not qualify for the tournament, which meant the winger had just under four weeks off. He did not treat it as a holiday. After learning of Arsenal’s interest, he spent part of that break training alone, building his fitness with the move in mind. Once back with Brugge, he then rolled straight into two weeks of pre-season, returning to full training in early July.

Those sessions were not gentle tune-ups. He even played 45 minutes in a friendly against Feyenoord, signing off from the Belgian side with the sort of moment Arsenal will hope to see on repeat: cutting in from the left and whipping a brilliant finish into the top corner. It was a farewell goal, but it looked very much like a preview.

So while many of his new team-mates only reported back to the Sobha Reality Training Centre this week, Tzolis has already been working at near-competitive intensity for most of the month. There was a mini-camp in Marbella for some of the Arsenal squad, but that did not match the load of his Brugge preparations. Right now, he might be the fittest forward Mikel Arteta has at his disposal.

Girona in sight

Tzolis has already joined his new team-mates in training as Arsenal’s pre-season officially gets under way. The Gunners face their first match next weekend against Girona in Spain, and the Greek winger travels with a clear advantage: rhythm, sharpness, and minutes in his legs.

With several senior players still on holiday and others only just back in full sessions, the door is open for him to make an immediate impression. Arsenal expect him to be in line for his first appearance for the club in that Girona fixture.

A new left winger, a vacancy created by Trossard’s departure, and a player already up to speed. Pre-season friendlies rarely feel decisive, but for Christos Tzolis, Spain could be the stage for an early statement.
