Arsenal Joins Enzo Fernandez Transfer Battle

Arsenal have stepped into one of the summer’s most high‑stakes transfer battles, joining Manchester City and Real Madrid in the chase for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez – but the Argentine is not at the top of Mikel Arteta’s shopping list.

Chelsea tore up the British transfer record in February 2023 when they wired £107m to Benfica for Fernandez. The fee has since been overtaken by the likes of Moises Caicedo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, but the scale of that gamble still frames every conversation about his future.

The early months at Stamford Bridge were bumpy. A chaotic team, rotating coaches, and a player still adjusting to the Premier League. Then the picture changed. Across a miserable Chelsea season that ended with 10th place in the league and defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, Fernandez quietly put together an outstanding individual campaign: 15 goals and seven assists in 54 games, driving from midfield while the club around him stalled.

That contrast now defines his summer. Fernandez wants out. He does not want to wait years for Chelsea to become genuine contenders for the Premier League and Champions League. The departure of Enzo Maresca, with whom he had built a strong relationship, cut deeper still and accelerated his thinking.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have moved into position. They are tracking the situation, aware of the opportunity, ready if the door opens to a shock raid on their London rivals.

Arteta’s true priority lies elsewhere

For all the noise around Fernandez, he is not Arteta’s main midfield obsession. That distinction, the report says, belongs to Sandro Tonali.

Arsenal made their first move in January, contacting Tonali’s camp and keeping a close eye on developments since. The Newcastle United midfielder, currently serving a ban, is understood to be open to a new start, with both Arsenal and Manchester United circling. Newcastle would still demand a huge fee: €100m, around £87m.

Tonali, then, is the primary target. Fernandez is the luxury option, the superstar you chase if the market tilts in your favour.

Chelsea dig in as giants circle

On the other side of London, new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has a clear stance. He wants Fernandez at the heart of his rebuild and sees him as a cornerstone for future success. The problem for Alonso is that the player has already instructed his agent to speak with interested clubs.

The list is elite. Real Madrid. Manchester City. Now Arsenal.

Madrid currently look the most likely destination. Reports in Spain on Thursday indicated Fernandez would prefer the Bernabeu over a move to City. During the March international break, he spoke openly about his desire to live in Madrid, drawing parallels between the Spanish capital and Buenos Aires. Those comments did not go unnoticed.

Inside Madrid, there is alignment. Jose Mourinho and Florentino Perez agree that the midfield needs another world‑class addition. With City refusing to entertain any move for Rodri, attention in the Spanish capital can naturally swing towards Fernandez.

Chelsea, for their part, are determined not to be burned on the numbers. They do not want a heavy loss on a player signed at such expense and have set a price of €120m (£104m), just under what they originally paid Benfica. At that level, only a handful of clubs can realistically step up.

City’s stance and a crowded market

Manchester City’s interest comes with a caveat. Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that Maresca – now in charge at Chelsea but formerly part of City’s coaching structure – “loves” Fernandez, yet there is no active negotiation between City and Chelsea.

City’s own midfield plans are currently pointed elsewhere. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson remains their top target. Only if that pursuit collapses could Fernandez move up their list as an alternative.

So the landscape is set. Madrid, with a clear need and a player openly attracted to the city. City, hovering but focused on Anderson. Arsenal, lurking with intent while pushing hard for Tonali. Chelsea, trying to cling to a player who has already started to look beyond Stamford Bridge.

One of Europe’s most complete midfielders is ready to move. The only question now is which project, and which badge, can convince Enzo Fernandez that his prime years will be spent chasing the trophies he refuses to wait for any longer.
