Arsenal’s summer midfield plan is starting to look like a high‑stakes game of chicken.

Mikel Arteta wants Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal have made that perfectly clear. Newcastle, just as firmly, are telling them to look elsewhere.

Two informal offers – £55 million and £65 million – have already been swatted away by Newcastle, who have shown no interest in entertaining talks for their captain. Internally, the Magpies value Guimaraes closer to the £90m–£100m mark, a figure that reflects both his influence on the pitch and his importance to their project.

Arsenal, though, are not backing down. A formal £70m bid is being prepared, this time put in writing rather than floated through intermediaries or quiet conversations. It is a statement offer, one that underlines how central Guimaraes is to Arteta’s vision of a more dominant, more complete midfield.

The response from Tyneside is already being telegraphed.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder have both indicated that the bid will be rejected. Sources spoken to by TEAMtalk went even further, delivering a blunt message from within the club: Arsenal’s imminent offer is “not welcome, not wanted and will not be accepted.”

That kind of language leaves little room for interpretation. If Newcastle hold their line, Arsenal will have to accept that Guimaraes is the one that got away – at least this summer – and pivot quickly.

And they already know where to turn.

Alex Scott: The contingency plan

The Bournemouth midfielder, just 22, has been earmarked at the Emirates as the primary alternative. Guimaraes remains the priority and the player Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with, but Scott is no longer just a name on a long list. He is the next man up.

The path to him is not straightforward either.

Arsenal have already had an approach for Scott rejected earlier in the summer. Since then, the player has declined to sign a new contract with Bournemouth, a move that would usually invite suitors to circle. Bournemouth, however, are in no mood to cash in.

With the club preparing for their first ever European campaign, they have made it clear they do not want to lose a key asset. The stance is firm, even as bids arrive from some of the Premier League’s biggest spenders.

Chelsea have already tested that resolve. As Ben Jacobs revealed, they tabled a £64m offer for Scott and were knocked back. The London club are exploring midfield options, but that bid – substantial by any measure – still fell short of Bournemouth’s valuation and ambition.

The message is obvious. Anyone who wants Scott will have to go far beyond £64m.

Arsenal’s next move

So Arsenal stand at a crossroads. Push their Guimaraes pursuit into nine‑figure territory and try to break Newcastle’s resistance, or accept defeat and enter another expensive negotiation for a younger, less proven but hugely talented alternative.

What is clear is that standing still is not an option. Arteta wants fresh energy and control in midfield, and the club are prepared to spend heavily to get it.

If Newcastle stay immovable on Guimaraes and Bournemouth refuse to budge on Scott without an eye‑watering fee, the question is no longer whether Arsenal are willing to invest.

It is how far they are prepared to go to land the midfielder who will define the next phase of their project.
