Andrey Santos Set for Manchester United Debut Against Wrexham

Andrey Santos is poised for his first glimpse of life in Manchester United red on Saturday, named in the travelling squad for the pre-season friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki.

The 22-year-old Brazilian, Michael Carrick’s first permanent signing, only walked through the doors at Carrington on Monday after completing a move from Chelsea that could rise to £50 million. Four days of training later, he is on the plane and in line for minutes as United’s new midfield era begins to take shape.

Carrick’s new core starts to form

Carrick’s group for Finland is a blend of hardened Premier League regulars and eager prospects, a 25-man squad stitched together while several senior names rest up from summer duty at the World Cup. Fellow new arrival Youri Tielemans is among those not involved, his integration delayed by those international exertions.

Santos, though, is in. So are Harry Maguire, Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee, giving the game a strong first-team spine despite the absences. Around them, Carrick has sprinkled youth, with highly rated youngsters Harry Amass and Shea Lacey both included.

On the right side of defence, Jaydan Kamason will sense a real chance to impress, while the midfield pool is swollen by Jacob Devaney, Dan Gore and Jim Thwaites, alongside Tyler and Jack Fletcher. For some of them, Helsinki is not just another pre-season stop; it is an audition.

Sesko stays home, door opens up front

One notable omission is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia striker, who missed the final three games of last season with a shin injury, has remained behind as he continues to build back towards full fitness.

His absence changes the picture in attack. With no Sesko, the stage opens up for young forwards Chidi Obi and Ethan Wheatley to stake a claim. JJ Gabriel, however, has not made the cut for this trip.

In goal, new signing Karl Darlow, brought in on a free from Leeds earlier in the week, has also stayed home. Veteran Tom Heaton leads the goalkeeping group in Finland, supported by Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee. For Darlow, his first United appearance will have to wait.

Wrexham tune up before U.S. tour

On the opposite side, Wrexham arrive in Helsinki with their own plans and their own absentees. Phil Parkinson’s side are using the fixture as a key step before they fly to the United States next week for a high-profile run of friendlies against Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland.

They have travelled without Josh Windass and Max Cleworth. Parkinson, though, sounded calm about the situation.

“We're where we need to be in terms of fitness,” he said. “We've got a few lads, like most clubs, who have come back in later, with one or two niggly things which have carried over from last season.

“However, we're not overly concerned with those and the lads are in a good place. There'll be a few who aren't quite ready for the game at the weekend and will be training here instead.

“Josh has been running this week. He's had a slight problem with his calf, but he's in great shape and there's no need to rush him too much. Max had a problem with his Achilles, which has been an ongoing problem. But we feel this off-season, and this slow build-up for him now, will do him good.”

For Wrexham, Helsinki is a checkpoint before a lucrative summer tour. For United, it is something else entirely: an early look at how Carrick’s rebuild might actually look on the pitch, and a first chance to see whether Andrey Santos can start to justify that £50m price tag.
