Andrea Pirlo Withdraws from Italy Head Coach Race Amid Betting Company Controversy

Andrea Pirlo has confirmed he is no longer a contender to become the next manager of the Italian national team after questions arose about his connection to a Russian betting company. The former Juventus and AC Milan midfielder expressed disappointment as his potential appointment fell apart due to his commercial ties.

From Favorite to Out of the Running

Once the leading candidate for the job, Pirlo was seen as the man to guide Italy’s rebuilding phase, especially after well-known names like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti declined the position. Rumors suggested he had agreed on a four-year deal worth around €1.5 million per season. Yet, this plan has suddenly unraveled, forcing the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to reconsider their options just when they seemed ready to appoint him. The push for Pirlo came mainly from FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo, both of whom are former teammates of his at AC Milan.

The Betting Link That Changed Everything

The main obstacle was Pirlo’s role as a global ambassador for Fonbet, a Russian betting company. Italy has strict laws against promoting gambling brands, making his involvement incompatible with a public football role. After discovering he was no longer being considered for the job, Pirlo addressed the situation via an Instagram Story.

"Out of respect for the institutions, the federation and everybody involved, I have chosen to remain silent until now," he said. "But after learning last night that I am no longer a candidate for the Italy national team head coach position, I feel it’s necessary to clarify a few things."

He spoke of watching the controversy unfold with bitterness, emphasizing that throughout his career, whether as player or coach, he acted within the laws of the countries he worked in and honored his contracts. Pirlo explained that his connection to the betting firm started during his time working in the United Arab Emirates and was strictly commercial and sports-related.

Rejecting Political Overtones

Pirlo firmly denied any political implications tied to his partnership with Fonbet. He criticized those who tried to turn the issue into something more than it was.

"Attributing political meaning to this collaboration means attributing convictions to me that I have never expressed and do not hold," he stated. "It is regrettable that a decision based on sporting grounds became a public debate assigning motives and intentions to my name that never existed. My love for Italy does not depend on a job."

What Lies Ahead for Italy?

The collapse of the Pirlo appointment leaves the FIGC and Paolo Maldini facing a tough challenge. A meeting planned for Tuesday, expected to confirm the new coach, will now be postponed. The federation must restart its search with the UEFA Nations League campaign on the horizon.

Despite the frustration evident in his message, Pirlo kept a respectful tone toward the federation's leaders. He thanked Maldini and Leonardo for their trust and expressed appreciation for their dedication to Italian football.
