Carlo Ancelotti Defends Neymar’s World Cup Selection as Brazil Legend Retires

Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil's head coach, has spoken out about Neymar's retirement from international football, firmly backing his decision to include the veteran star in Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad. Despite doubts surrounding Neymar’s fitness, the Italian coach insisted the forward’s presence was necessary for the team.

Neymar Ends a 16-Year International Career

The 34-year-old forward officially retired following Brazil’s disappointing round of 16 exit against Norway. Even after the early elimination, Ancelotti maintained that Neymar deserved his place in the squad traveling to North America.

Concerns Over Physical Readiness

Ancelotti acknowledged the challenges Neymar faced with his physical condition, including a grade 2 calf strain that caused him to miss the opening group matches against Morocco and Haiti. Speaking to ESPN, he admitted Neymar fell short of contributing technically due to these limitations. Still, the coach praised Neymar’s attitude and professionalism throughout the tournament.

"I have a lot of affection for him, I thanked him for his attitude, for his behavior, and I think it was the right decision to include him on the 26-man roster," said Ancelotti.

He did express disappointment over Neymar’s preparation leading into the tournament, saying the forward could have been ready earlier. "The only thing that bothered me is that Neymar could have prepared himself better during that lead-up period," the coach added. "He could have been ready for game one instead of game four. That was the only disappointing part."

Looking Ahead to a New Generation

With Neymar stepping away, Ancelotti is planning a rebuild as Brazil prepares for the 2030 World Cup. This change signals a shift from relying on icons of the past decade to promoting new talent.

"One generation ends and another has to come, and it has to be better than the last one," said the former Real Madrid manager.

More Veterans May Follow Neymar

Ancelotti suggested that Neymar won’t be the last high-profile player to retire from the national team. When asked about veterans like Casemiro, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, the coach hinted their time might be drawing to a close as well.

"It is a period that is coming to an end. Obviously, we have to thank all of them, and I have a lot of affection for all of them. But I think the idea that a player over 30 is done means that we have to think about the future," Ancelotti explained. "Some of these players will be there, obviously. Marquinhos, for example. Alisson, we'll see."
