Amara Nallo Joins HJK Helsinki on Loan from Liverpool

Amara Nallo’s Liverpool story takes a sharp turn north this week. The 19-year-old centre-back has agreed a loan move to HJK Helsinki for the rest of the Finnish season – and he could be thrown straight in.

With the Veikkausliiga campaign running from April to late October, Nallo arrives in time for the run-in. He will be available for the final six rounds of the regular season and the decisive closing phase, when the 12-team league splits into two sections for the title and relegation battles. It is a pressure point in the calendar, and HJK clearly believe a teenager from Merseyside can handle it.

He will not just be fighting for minutes domestically. Nallo has also been cleared to play in Europe and has been named in HJK’s squad for their Europa Conference League second qualifying round, starting with Thursday night’s first leg against Coleraine of Northern Ireland. From the fringes of Liverpool’s matchday group to the sharp edge of a European qualifier in Helsinki – the shift is dramatic.

Nallo joined Liverpool from West Ham United in 2023, a left-footed defender viewed as one for the future. His first 18 months at the club passed in relatively quiet fashion, spent largely with the under-21s as he learned the demands of Liverpool’s system and the physical jump from youth football.

The step into senior football, though, has been anything but quiet.

His debut came in a Champions League dead rubber at PSV Eindhoven in January 2025. It should have been a gentle introduction, late minutes in a game already decided. Instead, it turned into an unwanted slice of club history. Sent off just four minutes after coming off the bench, Nallo became the youngest player ever to receive a red card for Liverpool.

His second outing with the first team did little to soften that memory. Introduced again as a substitute, this time in a League Cup tie against Crystal Palace at Anfield last October, he lasted only 12 minutes before another red card cut his night short in a defeat that stung the home crowd.

There has at least been a calmer chapter. When Qarabag visited Anfield in the Champions League in January, Nallo came on for his third Liverpool appearance and successfully navigated the final 16 minutes without drama. Routine, solid, exactly what a young defender needs after such a turbulent start.

He has been close to the action more often than those three cameos suggest. Nallo has made the matchday squad on nine other occasions, most recently for the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in April. Close enough to feel the heat, not quite close enough to change the game.

That is what makes this move to HJK so important. In Finland he is not an emergency option or an experimental late substitute. He is a reinforcement for a title-chasing club entering the decisive stretch of their season, with European qualifiers on the horizon and little margin for error.

For Liverpool, the logic is clear. Nallo needs minutes, not more near-misses on the teamsheet. For HJK, the deal brings in a young defender shaped by one of Europe’s most demanding training environments.

Now comes the real question: can a turbulent start to senior life be turned into something steadier on the cool autumn nights of Helsinki?
